Response to dev:
Nope, 2 stars was correct. It’s not really my cup of tea. & not worth the forced iOS update…(afaik, no other app is forcing this atm so idk what makes you think you’re so special…)

Response from developer

Based on the text of your review, seems like you meant to give us 5 stars instead of 2 since Audulus is in fact great for making bleep bloop sounds, as well as great lush, ambient, polyphonic chords and hard driving acid bass lines! :)

It’s the synth app I’ve been pining for

I’ve been using Audulus for just a week and WOW. This really is what I’ve been wanting but didn’t know existed.

I picked up the Moog Model 15 app years ago and loved learning how to patch the components in nonstandard ways. But I wanted more…more LFO’s…Step sequencers to control LFO rates to control waveforms, etc. I haven’t yet found the limitations with Audulus. At first I thought I’d mostly be playing around conceptually, but I’ve already incorporated some Toto synth sounds to record in Cubasis using aux3.

It did take me a few hours to really get going in making my own creations. But there are ample video tutorials and active Discord conversations. Thanks everyone who posted patches!

It’s not for everyone. But if the notion of designing your own synths seems appealing, give it a try.

No upgrade path from audulus3

Not sure what the new additions are but thinking I’ll wait for the next version

Response from developer

The additions are massive. We've got a canvas node for 2d rendering, GLSL shader node for shadertoy style rendering, spigot node for saving CPU, memory node for low-level buffer manipulation, a DSP node for writing your custom DSP code, a vastly expanded library, and more!

Even better than v3

Audulus 4 is fantastic for creating custom effects and synths.

Response from developer

Thank you so much hacked_to_pieces, so glad you're enjoying it! :)

Audulus 4 is fantastic!

Audulus 4 is the stuff of dreams if, like me, you like to tinker and customize and are in love with sound. I've been able to design synths and effects to suit my interests. It has been great both for creating sounds I never thought I'd be able to make -- but also for understanding how sound "works".

Thank you so much AudioFanX! So glad to see you've taken to Audulus so well. We agree, Audulus can be a super powerful tool for really understanding how synthesis works from the ground up :)

intriguing, still studying before making my first experiment

5 Stars now! Very wild and deep experience! I just added a couple of new nodes to one of the templates to add an LFO change to one of the controls. Wow. So nodes can nest within modules that can nest within other modules. This is going to be a lot of fun. No crashes, and live patching without pops and glitches on a 2018 macbook. Good job!

Earlier: Upgraded my rating to 4 after trying out each of the supplied music templates on iOS.... intriguing, am now reading the documentation about the nodes...
And preparing for Mac OSX upgrade.... Update: The upgrade to OSX 13.1 went ok.

Original title: Forced upgrades to OSX and iOS. Very inconvenient

This software looks really great. It forced me to do an upgrade of the iOS on my iPad, ok, no big deal, did that, now I have a bunch of new stuff to get used, hope I chose an iOS that isnt horribly buggy.... But forcing me to upgrade my Mac OX from 12.3.1, where everything is working just fine, and I know I have other software that is not compatible of an OSX upgrade, this is really no bueno of Audulus. Really not looking forward to losing other software, and all the other instability that I will likely find in the ecosystem of apps I use on my Mac, whose usage is much more series, and less tolerant of breaking things. Please in the future dont force your users to be on the bleeding edge of OS upgrades. Your software looks really great, but it is hard to imagine you could not have made your app continue to work on a prior OS like most other major software continues to do...... This whole issue of software forced OS upgrades, and the ripple instabilities and problems, is exacly why some people are devoted to hardware based music production, such as on Akai MPC's and such. A studio can stay working for years and years, with all the workflow the artists have learned, and none of the periodic "sorry the studio is down, we did an OS upgrade and now we cant read the NTFS backup volumes until we find a new software driver." ...... I will update my review after I go through this painful upgrade, it looks like you do enough cool stuff compared to my other variety of modular synth softwares, to make the pain worth it.

Thank you so much for updating your review! We require the OS versions we do because it gets around a bug in Apple's code around rendering screenshots of patches in the module browser - if they fix that or we find a way around it ourselves, we'll lower the requirements! I would love to show you some more educational material - you seem like a curious inquiring mind that really is starting to get the power of Audulus' low-level capabilities. If you're interested, please email us at support@audulus.com and I'll direct you to some excellent resources on our forum and website! :)

Wish it had midi out to sequence other synths

Great app so far. I hope it would eventually have the capability to have a midi out so I can use the midi sequence modules on other synths like MiRack.

Absolute CPU eater!

Tried demo on Gen 1 iPad Pro, most of the demo patches stutter like crazy with 80% or higher cpu usage. You will need an m1/2 to run this unfortunately. So a current Gen iPad Pro. Unfortunate.

Response from developer

Hey PDNerd! Audulus actually runs pretty efficiently - what you're experiencing is an unfortunate side effect of two things: 1) Not being able to test every patch on old hardware and 2) Not wanting to be limited when showing off what Audulus can do only make patches that will run on the oldest of hardware. Just as an aside, your iPad is, as far as I can tell, the absolute oldest hardware that can still run iOS 16 - many, even just slightly newer iPads, are not having the trouble you are, so it is not true that you need a M1 or M2 iPad to run Audulus. I myself have a 2017 Macbook Pro which is far less powerful than the M1/2 iPads and that's where I created most of the demo patches. Perhaps we should to avoid reviews like this, however, because if you had opened Audulus and all of the demo patches worked without running into a CPU wall, you would not have jumped to the conclusion that Audulus is a CPU eater. You can still do a lot with Audulus on a first gen iPad Pro, but I mean, c'mon - the first gen iPad was released 8 years ago - I think you're being unfair when you're calling Audulus a CPU eater. Many music programs use less CPU, and you can also do much less with them as well. There are also many newer synths that I bet your iPad would struggle to use, especially with high polyphony. Come over to the forum and discord and we can discuss how you can get the most out of your iPad - you can certainly go beyond the demo patches and into building something that more suits your older hardware! That's actually one of the strengths of Audulus.

Great software

I am using this on my IPad to pair with my modular with an ES-9. It really is fantastic and it has lots of features you can expand your system with including even building your own modules. What i do have to say actually is on the forums and on the discord the makers are super responsive , polite and kind and go out of their way to help you. So i can attest you will not only get a great product for music but also a great community willing to help you grow. The sound quality is also a step up compared to Max or Pure Data. I think it sits well within the sound sphere of Supercollider and its ilk which i hold in the highest regard , but with this only node programming is required vs SC’s programmer centric workflow. So its nice to come to something at the end of the day to unwind and create music with that will be anywhere on my travels.
So i give it a 10/10 and i hope to learn more as i go along.

Hi Ziforge! Thank you for your lovely review :) It's high praise to put us among Max, Pd, and Supercollider, all of which are excellent digital modular synthesis environments. I think you'll be excited to see what the future holds as far as more Eurorack integration into Audulus - there's a whole arena of control and helper modules we're going to start including for use with Expert Sleepers and DC-coupled audio interfaces, as well as eventually MIDI out modules as well! For those who aren't afraid to mix their modular with their computer or at least their iPad, it'll be a huge boon in functionality. Thanks again for the lovely review, and thank you for being a part of our growing community!

adulus 4

wow, what an update to an already killer piece of software. hyperion is the only other modular synth that sounds this good.

Response from developer

Thank you so much nodata004! We're so glad you're digging the new update :) Hope to see you over at the forum and Discord!
