  • The best of the best

I've been using a lot of lyric-writing, poetry-writing apps for years now and this one is by far the best. Syllable counting, rhyme matching, it's got it all and works across my devices. Love it and can't say enough good stuff about this app.

Hey JoeMD666, thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to leave a review for Lyrcs! ❤️ If there’s anything you need to make Lyrcs work better for you, don’t hesitate to reach out on the website at https://lyrcs.app. Especially if you encounter a cheeky crash, I’m trying to eliminate all those 😅
  • Great Start…

Hey, really like where you are going with this. Love the syllable count along left margin, and the way you don’t highlight all prospective rhymes or interesting word combinations like Rhymer’s Block does. I also like that all rhymes are different colors. Presumably phonetic rhymes occur across song sections? Would be cool. A few changes to make it ready for me to buy: 1) move the rhyme list over to the right side of the screen so it doesn’t obscure the lyrics I already have while I’m searching for a rhyme; I’d prefer if it wasn’t separate window but just another column too with less clutter; so the app is not trying to find rhymes too much, let us sit over a word for maybe 5-10 seconds before you start showing rhymes; 2) show internal rhymes within a line or neighboring lines; 3) add more rhymes; 4) have a looser interpretation of what rhymes to include imperfect rhymes, such as “aim” and “games”. This could be a big app I think. Wish you well with further development! Good luck!

Hey 28dkwoo! Thanks so much for your feedback, you'll be happy to know I took it very seriously and all these changes are visible in version 3.7.0.  1) The rhyme list has been moved to the right side of the screen. Rhymes can now also appear in real-time.  2) Rhymes can be grouped by the section they're in instead of grouped by the whole file. Not sure if that's exactly what you wanted but it's included anyway. You can always force a highlighted rhyme by having the words be the last in a line. 4) Looser interpretation of rhymes can be achieved through the Near Rhyme feature. In the bottom right of the editor you'll see a button that allows you create them i.e. aim and games. Thanks again for your feedback, it's helped shape Lyrcs into an even better app. If you think it's now worthy of 5 stars please consider a re-review, otherwise don't hesitate to reach out through the website (https://lyrcs.app) to let me know how Lyrcs can help you achieve your needs.
  • Real Mac App for Writing Lyrics

This app does exactly what it says, looks great, and does it while being a real Mac app. It's exactly what I wanted.

It uses plain text files, which is amazing, because they're easy to backup and I'm not locked in at all.

On top of it all, the developer is extremely responsive. It's the app I would make, but now I don't have to!

Hey Collin, thank you so much for your review and for reaching out to provide many amazing suggestions. Lyrics has a lot of new features today thanks to your requests! All the best in your lyric writing journey.
  • A Real Mac App for Writing Lyrics

This app does exactly what it says, looks great, and does it while being a real Mac app. It's exactly what I wanted.

The only thing I would like to see added is a way to annotate sections and chords that gets ignored for the syllable counting and rhyming.
  • Looking forward to Verison 3

My only Request atm would be the ability to not color code override rhymes but also use highlights (i tend to use highlights for rhymes and colored text for assonance and alliteration (both internal and external).

The rhyme helper isn't very effective yet but I don't plan to use it too much so I don't mind. Another thing I do to help graph rhyme schemes is use superscript numbers to signal where a line ends on the bar-line. Ex: '¹' '²' '³' '⁴' .ect
I just put those in the rhyme search area to easily copy and paste them.

The syllables being on left side is a bit unintuitive to me, I would expect that to be the bar number and I would expect the syllable count to be on the right. I imagine thats something others also felt.

I've proposed the idea to others (really anyone who I believe may take the idea) of a multi syllable rhyme dictionary which would be super useful and would be unique. You could have a community build a multi syllable rhyme dictionary by having people submitting suggestions and their own rhymes (ofc monitoring them). As a paid add-on thats a great idea and the only one of it's kind. There are others working on book multi-syllable rhyming dictionaries but they are doing it completely alone and are very small in size at the moment.

Anyways, I gave the app a 5 star review because I want it to have a chance to improve.

Hey Swim'n Bird, Thank you for the descriptive review! You've mentioned so many good ideas 😍 I will look into all of them. Some of them I'd love a bit more information on so if you had the time, you could reach out through the contact form at https://lyrcs.app#contact and I can pick your brain 😅Hopefully we can talk soon!
  • I need to learn to match syllables to music

I should have learned on my own before, I know, but I don’t know which syllables match with which musical notes. I’m not seeing ANYTHING to help me with this, beyond color coding, and what looks like a rhythm counter.

    Developer Response

Hey MacToirneach, thank you for your review. The colors show rhymes between words and the number on the left are the total syllables for that line. You can also highlight some text and open up the context menu to see the total syllables for the highlighted range. This app isn’t for writing musical notes so apologies if it came across that way. If you had any more question please feel free to reach out at https://lyrcs.app/#contact and I'd be happy to help you out. Good luck on your musical journey 🎶
  • Delightful, Clean, Focused App

I feel like this may not be getting a fair shake, or maybe I'm on a curve as I'm just using it for poetry. This is an excellent, universal minimalist writing app with helpful syllable tracking and a nice break-glass-in-case-of-emergency rhyme dictionary. Hopping between the Mac and iPhone apps as I work out my poems has been an absolute pleasure. Thanks!

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to write some kind words! It’s encouraging reading reviews like this to know Lyrcs is on the right path of being a simple app to write lyrics and poetry. There are some new features upcoming but if there is something you find is lacking I’m very receptive to hearing and improving Lyrcs (you can reach out on the contact us page on https://lyrcs.app). Good luck in your poetry journey! 💪
  • It's Okay...

I have started using this app, and it is helpful because it keeps count of how many syllables you use. But, I think that this app needs different sections for different things. For example, there can be a section for the chorous, and a section for the pre-chorous. This is very helpful for me because I am very new to song-writing and I like it whenever the app kind of helps you by using sections. Whenever I opened up this app I realized that it did not have different sections and I felt like the app was just throwing me out there and not helping me at all.

    Developer Response

Hey Writing Dragon, thanks so much for your review. So glad you’re loving the features like syllable counting! Being able to identify sections is also a great suggestion. Could you try writing the title of the section above your lines of lyrics? Given it’s a free app created to help out the song writing community, a 2 star review unfortunately doesn’t help foster that community. Could I ask that you reconsider the rating?
  • BEWARE: PERFECT RHYMES ONLY

This app is okay, I guess. But it only allows you to do perfect ryhmes. I tried using it, and at first it worked. But I'm a rapper, and sometimes you need other rhymes than perfect rhymes, and it doesn't help me. In fact, I feel that it makes me limit myself to the perfect rhymes it gives me, and not to the abounding world of rhymes. So I only go to this app as a last resort if I'm really stuck.

Hey Zach H and ALIENATION, Thank you for your review! Apologies for the delayed reply but I listened to your feedback and I have some amazing news, Lyrcs now contains a feature called ✨ Near Rhymes ✨. It allows you to link two words together that aren't perfect rhymes. These two words will then appear as the same color in the editor. Select the PRO button in the app to find out more. Reach out at https://lyrcs.app/#contact if you had any questions. P.S. If you think that your star rating could be revisited after trying out this feature I would appreciate it greatly 🙏
  • Apparently only perfect rhymes supported

Won't let me rhyme "home" with "alone"

Pat Pattiston would be not be pleased. He really likes those "soft" rhymes....

But some people are really big on perfect rhymes only.

    YMMV

But one star from me, cause I can't use it.
