Description of Matter Neuroscience

Be happier. As seen in Happiness, the film by Max Joseph. Your data is your data. Your photos, personal health, and memory information are kept private on device and in your iCloud account. They are not shared with Matter. Here’s how it works. COLLECT GOOD MOMENTS Pay attention to moments when you feel good. In the app, add a memory with a photo and other details to help you remember it. BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD Our positive emotions are activated by six neurotransmitters in the brain. When you recall a good moment, those neurotransmitters are reactivated. So, you feel the same positive emotions you experienced the first time around. (We’ve confirmed this in studies, observing participants’ brains in MRIs. Learn more at matter.xyz/science.) RATE YOUR GOOD FEELINGS Quickly rate the positive emotions you felt during this moment. Your emotion ratings are used to decrypt the neurotransmitter activity in your brain. This data is translated into your Matter Score. GET INSIGHTS TO HELP YOU GROW Tracking your Matter Score is a way to see how you’re doing, from the inside, out. Neurotransmitter activity helps build neuroplasticity in the brain. Higher levels of neuroplasticity correlate with higher levels of creativity, intelligence, and empathy as well as longer, healthier, happier lifespans. (This is backed by long-standing research. Find our bibliography at matter.xyz/references.) DO MORE OF WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY As you add more memories, you’ll get more science-backed insights and suggestions for being your best self. YOUR REAL LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING IN THIS APP When you can see what actually makes you feel good, you can do more of it. But of course, that part is up to you. Matter is just here to help. YOUR DATA IS YOUR DATA Read our privacy policy: matter.xyz/privacy Read our terms of service: matter.xyz/terms

  • Enjoyable, Lots of Potential

Currently I like the app, but I can see it going a lot further! I used to only use the Apple Health app to document my emotions but I like the idea of having a gallery of positive experiences to look back on and reflect what I have.

For the user, I don’t find this to be a huge chore to use. Finding photos for all positive events may be hard if you’re someone like me who doesn’t snap a picture of everything, but for the important ones I don’t think this is difficult. The UI is pleasant to look at and appealing in a futuristic way. The app icon is pleasant subtle and won’t give itself away as a type of emotion tracker if don’t want other people tempted to look through it.

    My suggestions would be
    - More explanation of what joyalities are — I have a friend who appears in 27 of my memories and I thought that would be enough by now but haven’t seen anything and not sure when to expect when I will
    - Testosterone is a healthy chemical to keep in balance but I don’t want to document anything that would relate to that hormone, any way to turn it off? Maybe a silly ask but if this is available for minors that could be a little odd to suggest as a goal and such
    - Stats option for a line graph of hormones over time
    - Map of “happy places”. There already is the option to add a location, this would just be a cool feature
    - Perhaps this is already implemented but maybe having the brain chart have an animation that grows in intensity as you add more emotions

I’m looking forward to seeing where the developers take this app and I was honestly surprised to see only 27 reviews. Normally I don’t write reviews but for this I thought I’d go out of my way to contribute my experience and thoughts.

  • Matter is a must-have app for leading a happier life

With the latest update I can finally rate my emotions and officially build up my memory bank of positive emotions! Many thanks to the Matter team that tackled the memory creation crash quickly in response to user feedback. Now I can see what the app is all about!
The Matter app has made me think more about what I will do each day to ensure I feel a little bit happier. Too often I find myself chasing down to-do lists or foregoing my own happiness needs to accommodate others. And then I’m just depleted at the end of the day (despite getting 8+ hours sleep!)
When we live in a culture driven toward productivity, our worth feels tied to being busy. Then it’s hard to take the time to do something just because it makes us feel good.
Matter has made me aware that my happiness is a worthy endeavor. It taught me that slowing down to actually experience good moments and reflect on life builds neuroplasticity, which makes us smarter, more empathetic, and more creative. Happiness makes us more likely to say and do kind things for others. It also apparently leads to a longer, healthier life.
And the Matter app encourages me be happier by encouraging me to create positive memories every day with its beautiful UI and smart tips. I highly recommend others try it, and consider adding “create a positive memory” to their to-do lists. It’s a worthy endeavor!
