Leave a Review Shakespeare
Sigh
They keep finding things to charge you for. I downloaded this app four years ago and had access to all the features. Now those same features I had for free are behind yet another pay wall. Before this I would’ve given a 5 star review, but being nickel-dimed for the qualities that made the app exceptional greatly diminishes its value in my eyes. They should honor their customers. Simple as that.Show lessDeveloper Response
For the last 15 years, all Pro features you and everyone originally purchased are still available (in fact, you'll find many new features have been added over the last 15 years for no extra cost). Again, no features whatsoever have been "moved behind a paywall", nor have any been removed. You couldn't be more wrong about that. But if you'd contacted support about your erroneous concerns that features have been "removed", I could have explained this—but you didn't do that and gave a negative rating instead. Any new features released in recent years and considered "power user" features are available as separate purchases. This approach keeps the Pro features that most users need at an affordable price point—and also helps support 15 years worth of ongoing maintenance and support costs for those users who have already purchased the Pro upgrade. You'd be hard-pressed to name another app that's been maintained and improved year after year ever since the App Store first opened. So far so good, with one suggestion!
The app is great. Pretty easy to navigate and UI is smooth. I just have one suggestion for the dear developers; If it was possible to include the modern translations in the Pro version it would be awesome. I understand the need for add-ons but it feels like the Pro tier could use some more features. good job lads.Show lessDeveloper Response
Thank you for your feedback. The features included in the Pro upgrade are quite generous. You get notes, bookmarks, study materials, character/scene descriptions, and best of all—the Shakespeare's Words glossary. The app has been a labor of love since the first day the App Store opened (15 years ago!) so it's reinvested into the app itself over many years. Thank you for your support! One of the best-designed apps in existence
This is one of the most incredible apps I have ever used.

The features, interface, and usability are off the charts in terms of an astounding user experience. And the content and value are priceless — especially considering that so much of it is just free. I really can’t say enough; I genuinely get chills of delight and *gratitude* every time I use this app.

No matter what type of user you come as, on any given day — student, teacher, actor, director, casual reader, or merely to look up literary references — the developers have thought through each of those needs and more, and perfected your experience to the highest degree. In fact, you will probably find that they’ve given you a wealth of options you didn’t know you wanted, which are so useful and sensible that before long, you can’t imagine not having those options.

I’ve been using this app since its very first version, and every step of the way it has been a labor of love and homage to the Bard. I can’t give enough thanks and appreciation to the people who have generously devoted their talents to creating the ideal digital Shakespeare in a way that’s available to everyone.

This app is a testament to the very best of digital design — an experience worthy of the very best of English literature.Show lessDeveloper Response
Thank you for your feedback! Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any suggestions for improvement.Versatile study of Shakespeare
So many ways to read the text and with so much supplementary information. I have had this app for almost a decade and it has been added to and improved many times. I’m writing this review not because I really have anything of value to say but because I want to support this gem and bargain. I’m also a teacher and am excited about the children’s curricula. Thank you, developers, for helping keep Shakespeare alive in the world!Show lessDeveloper Response
Thank you for your thanks! Yes, it's a labor of love so it's much appreciated!Change to double-tap for menu bar, please!
Every time after you look up a word, the menu bar comes up, and you have to tap and wait for it to go away. Plus it gets set off accidentally while scrolling and creates an obstacle to smooth reading. It should be made to come up via a double tap instead.Developer Response
If you have any issue with the app, you should get in touch with support. It's easy and most issues can be resolved immediately. There's an option to hide the menu bar in the app settings. Also, you don't have to wait for it to go away to scroll or interact with the app.Wonderful + Responsive
The app itself is outstanding - clearly a labor of love, with a generous free version and a one-time-purchase business model for the pro version (in defiance of the annoying trend towards subscription everything).
Also, I had an issue with scrolling not working correctly and within a week of reporting it they fixed the bug + released an update with the fix; I’ve never seen such outstanding responsive support from a developer before.Show lessHelpful, but sloppy
Full of typos and errors — none catastrophic, but still….
Will be helpful to some, just annoying to others. I can’t imagine why they put so much fine work into creating this app, but have not bothered to go back and correct all the mistakes.Developer Response
If you've actually found an error, you can report it to support@playshakespeare.com and get a free upgrade for reporting it (and it will be fixed). I've done this a small number of times since the app was released in 2008 so there shouldn't be any at all.Bravo
This free app represents an amazing act of generosity towards all people who love Shakespeare and would like to get to know him better. Setting aside the complete texts of the plays and poems, with easy and straightforward navigation, there's heaps of information on historical aspects, a biography, portrait gallery, there's synopses, information on and analyses of characters, and much else. For anybody to put all this much together, present it in the format of a mobile app, and to offer it for free, just to make the world a better place--that is a labor of love. And a win. A big thank you. Thoroughly recommended!Show lessConstantly bugging me to upgrade and leave reviews
