Simply the best

This app is the best. It seems a little pricey but was well worth it to me. I am learning Japanese for an expatriate assignment. This app allows me to learn the specific kanji's my teacher is teaching me. The multiple test modes are awesome. The only thing that would make this app better is if it had audio of pronunciations. But with over 5,000 kanji's and 9,000 words it would take a lot of disk space. Other people mentioned the kotoba app for free. I tried it but first but it is no where close to the functionality of this app.

Amazing

I've had this app for about a year, and wow, it's extremely helpful and convenient. I know about 420 kanji now thanks to this app, something that would've been impossible without it (as I'm not very motivated). It has always served me unfailingly. Definitely recommend.

What a great app

I majored in Japanese 25 years ago and forgot how to write a lot of kanji. With a stylus pen, this is such a great way to brush up... I'm seeing my re-remembering improving quickly...very good interface, well set up... Would definitely recommend compared to the other kanji / Japanese iOS apps I've tried...

Essential for Muscle Memory

I've been using this app for the last 5 months and it has been essential in getting me from half-knowing about a 100 characters up to 400 now. There are lots of kanji apps out there but this one really pounds the correct stroke order into you and shows you when you've written poorly or incorrectly. I review vocab in other apps but this one is key for practicing writing.

The only addition I'd like would be to compile lists of compounds based on the characters I know. That way, on the iPad screen, one could practice writing out whole word compounds, as some characters aren't very useful by themselves.

Keep it up guys, and thanks!

Great but if only...

We, me and my half Japanese kids, have been looking for this app for ages. So I commend the creators for making this app, but there is one really nagging problem. The handwritten character samples are not correct. The stroke order is fine and the basic shape is correct, but the stroke finishes of "haneru" and "harau" are missing. A non native Japanese must have written the samples as failing to "haneru" and "harau" would get a "batsu" in your kanji test. I know as my daughter is doing 3rd grade Kanji now.

If the creators could fix this problem through a software upgrade I would give it a 5. Maybe...

The tests are good but the creators could think of tests that are more akin to how the Kanji tests are set up, or give compound words are only half the reading that would be really enticing.

Worthwhile investment

If you really want to learn kanji, this is worth the money. I am slowly but surely increasing my 'vocabulary'. A few additions would be great, like being able to slowly introduce smaller sets of kanji at a time, seeing examples of kanji used in words, and being able to immediately practice a kanji that you get wrong in a test. But this is definitely a good investment.

fantastic!

Never bothered to write a review before but this app is so useful I figured I'd make the effort. Simply put: you could spend a _lot_ more and not learn nearly as fast. At least for me, the progress since using this one (as well as Kana LS) has been amazing. Worth every penny and more!

Wanna learn Kanji? -Get this!

An awesome application! Considering all the dough and time we (learners of japanese) spend on trying to learn japanese, KANJI LS, paid for itself in one day (in time alone). The thought, hard work and the EXCELLENT support response that goes into this and effectiveness of the application, makes it well worth the $. Together with ANKI srs ,I use it for Heisig's RTK writing practice instead of paper.

-Thanks Jan!

Great tool, terrible penmanship

This app might be an invaluable tool for those learning to read and write Japanese. Infact, I'm quite impressed by this app as there are few alternatives available for ipad that will go through all the grades with this type of testing method. That said, the handwritten kanji that users are supposed to mimic by tracing and comparing is TERRIBLE. Such penmanship would be embarassing, so WARNING: just make sure you look at better examples of handwritten kanji to copy if you want to use your Japanese skill for business or school!!! In school you may have points deducted for incorrect stroke endings/flairs at higher levels.

Response from developer

The handwriting was added as an alternative and to show that in real live Japanese people do not always stick to the textbook strokeorder.

Very useful

This app is helping me get my degree :)
