Monal is very simple & useful iM App -I found while looking for a GTalk app for iOS that wasn't intrusive, cluttered (like most others), and that didn't have ads.
I like it so much that if it were made a paid-app, I would gladly support it. -New interface from the updt. looks great, can't wait to test-it-out!Show lesscriolle
Best XMPP messenger for iPhone
I'm very happy with Monal. It is a clear, straightforward instant messaging app using the Jabber (XMPP) protocol. Very simple to use and it is very responsive and reliable. The only thing keeping me from giving it five stars is that it does not have in-app account registration. Aside from this, it is the best XMPP messenger available for iOS. Doesn't show contact lists from Openfire
While I can in theory add everyone's name by hand, this is daunting with several hundred users that I have to be able to contact. A great looking app, but this is a show-stopper.
All of our rosters on our openfire servers are auto-generated and divided by department, if Monal would do a simple roster pull it would be about the perfect app for IM on the road.
I use Adium all day every day on my Mac, someone told me I should look into Monal for my iPad. I have, and I won't be back unless it starts working as well as Adium does.Show lesssysadmin with ipad
Works great with open fire & plays nice with spark.
Running an open fire jabber server here at the office and this is one of the few apps for iOS that works. It's quick and pretty easy to use.
I would say there is room for improvement. Text entry box isn't moving above keyboard (iPad mini), which is pretty annoying. I would also like to see some better flexibility with the notification options (vibrate on/off, sound selection, etc)Show lessJoe Mike T
Awesome xmpp app
We just implemented an openfire chat server at work and I was looking for an iPhone client when I found this. So far I've had success connecting w/o issues from an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4S both running iOS 6. The only weird thing I have noticed was my account got added 4 times on my phone. I probably was hitting something wrong. Keep up the great work!Show lessfredthebear
serious bugs to work out
thanx for the app but you have some serious bugs to work out...I only use this app because its the only one that works with openfire.
This app crashes with almost everything you do. Right now it doesn't want to show you your contacts like the images shown on the App Store nor does it reformat the screen size well if you start out in the landscape mode of the iPad. Great Chat Client
Nice to find a fast, stable and best of all Free chat client for iPad and iPhone as a universal app. Monal is almost a complete replacement for Facebook Messenger. Messenger is a small iPhone app ( Not Universal ). It would be nice if Monal was able to do MUC ( Multi-User Chat ) and it's the only reason I'm keeping Messenger around. the little things
This app almost does a good job of being an IM client, but falls short on a number of little things that could make it so much better. For example, when using a bluetooth keyboard, hitting Enter does not send a message, it just appends a newline to the message. Or the size of the message box - it's too small. If it's not already in focus, I have to click several times to bring it into focus so I can type in it. If you switch to another app, you'll miss any incoming messages. Worst of all, it crashes a lot.Show lesssahoenig
Iffy on iPad2
I use this app for gchat and it will randomly log me off in the middle of chats. The screen goes dark and exits to the home screen and when I open it, I have to wait to be logged in again. The only good side is that it keeps a log so I don't lose my whole conversations. The first time this happened I thought it was a bad connection but now it's been at 3 times just for today, and I am sure my connection is fine.Show lessstelle10
Very useful
Thanks for a very useful app. I use it to connect to the SMS-via-XMPP service that goes with my VOIP service, and it works well. I've also recently started using it for Gtalk, and that's useful as well.
For a future version, please consider improving the resilience of the connection; for example, it would be great if Monal relayed notifications immediately after the phone booted, instead of requiring me to tap on it first before it begins to run in the background.
However, that's a relatively minor quibble, and I appreciate the work you've put into the app.Show lessGrahamFreeman
