Amateurish experience

In theory this app is great, when it works. It has ratings and game logs, even a connection strength indicator. So you’d think it would be pretty rare or impossible to disconnect and this app pretend everything is fine with its server connection and that the other player has aborted? Especially when you have a strong active connection with reliable fast internet speed. So tell me why then on multiple occasions has this exact same scenario happened?! It’s a complete waste of time and effort, sitting waiting for the other person to move or abort and then have points deducted and the record say something completely different.

Edit: I have updated the app and so far had no issues, thanks for fixing it. I would still be grateful to have my lost points reinstated from both occasions where that happened to me.

We're sorry for the interruption in your games! This issue has been resolved in the latest update (v4.7.17), so please ensure to download it from the AppStore. If you encounter any further difficulties, you can visit this link for assistance: www.chess.com/support.

Timer issue spoils the experience

The app is nice to use and is usually enjoyable. The lessons and reviews/analysis features have been helpful in improving my play and understanding of the game.

The timer issues, where you think you are waiting on your opponent to make a move only to find out the clock was ticking for you, has pretty much spoiled my experience with this app. This is not an unknown issue. I have waited through several “bug fix” updates claiming to address this problem, and several reviews also reference this issue. The timer issues seemed to pop up a month or so ago. Now, it is about 1 in 4 games where I will either lose the game from a timeout or be severely impaired after waiting at least a minute for the opponent to move and then seeing the clocks immediately change on screen where my time was lost. I played a lot of 5 and 3 minute games, so that time lost is pretty valuable.

If you’re more interested in learning and playing non-timed games, I would recommend this app. For me, I’ve downgraded from Platinum to Gold, and then cancelled the subscription and removed the app completely. I no longer trust the app in terms of fair play and feel I’ve wasted so much time with it already.

Designed to support unfair play. Deleting reviews?

I’ve written a review for this app a half dozen times. I make sure it’s there after submitting. The reviews are always gone every time I come back to check it days or weeks or months later. Every single time. Allows people to switch to premoves in the middle of a game which means that when someone is losing, they can just switch to premoves and run out the clock by moving back and forth. It’s pathetic. You’ll be winning with literally three times the time remaining and you’ll run out first. Because connection to their server is so poor (on iPhone, Google phone, laptops, desktops, using wi-fi, hardline, or cellular data) you make a move, then your opponent moves and you watch their clock jump up while yours drops. Routinely places pieces in the tile adjacent to the one I click (again, on multiple devices. I’m not just fatfingering it). I often randomly lose connection in the middle of a game and lose “due to abandonment” but conveniently only the games I’m winning. Still not a single issue resolved. And now they seem to completely ignore cheating. People will make absolutely awful moves all game until it really counts, then they suddenly take an unusual amount of time to plan out a near-perfect string of moves that leads to victory. Support used to go after people like this and adjust players’ ratings who had lost to them. Not anymore. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Consistent Problems With Timer

Update on update - this app continues to get worse and worse every day. Their timer is so far off it is unbelievable. 8 seconds remaining on my clock 1.1 opponents (of course they don’t resign because it’s a platform full of players with no etiquette) and somehow they manage to make 8 moves and somehow my 8 seconds evaporates - it’s total nonsense. Someone invent a better app please.

This use to be a good app until they kept adding all the non chess related fluffery to try and attract more players

UPDATE - the developers replied saying that they have anti cheating measures. But whatever they are using is not working. This gets consistently worse each day. I attempted to Give another go, but it’s beyond a joke now. Work out a way to stop timer cheats and maybe you can have a decent platform again. I love playing the app when it goes right, in particular I love playing bullet chess as a time filler (really helped with quitting smoking as well) . Problem is though that either the timer is faulty on a regular occasion (games where I have 7 seconds left and opposition has 2 seconds left but someone wins on time making 20 moves in 2 seconds) or the opposition are able to Cheat the timer somehow. Either way it’s super frustrating as the game is ruined

Great app for all levels

As the title suggests I really enjoy using this app, it suits ( in my opinion) players of all levels from those who have never played chess to the highest grandmasters. There is no shortage of educational content such as puzzles and lessons, game review and self analysis make it easy to see where one went wrong in game. One addition I would like to see is a sound effect added when a brilliant move is played( something short and can be toggled off by the player) I just think it would be a nice touch. Regardless great app !

Response from developer

Thanks for an amazing review. We're glad you're enjoying all the Chess.com app has to offer! A sound effect for Brilliant moves is a very cool idea, and we'll look into that possibility for the future.

CHESS: Play and Learn

This is a great app for anyone who loves chess, and wants to play a better game. The lessons are both written and/or visual, catering to multiple learning styles. Multiple videos, produced and narrated by Master players, explain the common to Master level openings and strategic play, including defensive moves. This app will help the beginner improve their play, and keep the hopeful Master satisfied with blitz games, the analysis of historic battles, news stories, and more. If you want to learn to play, or are looking for more partners, at whatever level you play, this is the best chess app I’ve seen. If you love the game, if you can afford an upgraded version, buy it. Stop looking at other sites. Don't waste your time. The learning opportunities are varied and entertaining, features too many to mention. A range of world wide players, both in skill and technique, will challenge and introduce you to different ways to play. Wish I had had this when I first learned to play! The Diamond upgrade with access to all teaching courses, would be a great gift for the young player who is not challenged enough by his/her peers, and wants to learn the tactics and strategies used by the old GrandMasters! As I've said, great app., spendy. EzraKeyWest

Best phone game app. Ever.

Finding this app, and playing chess on my phone, has been the best thing I’ve come across for entertainment. It’s so good, it’s addictive!
I love the option to play for free (including online matches with friends and anyone in the world), or the subscription that gives you access to unlimited lessons, puzzles, bot matches, and more.
I play daily, and look forward to new puzzles every morning. It’s a great way to pass time if you’re not doing anything else and, honestly, really really fun too :)

Love it but please fix some things. 🤓

So I play games daily and love it, but when I do custom for some reason when I put up some fun setup, everytime I hit ☑️ it says invalid positioning. I don’t know why it does this. Please, people reading this, don’t take it as a negative comment, I’m just sending a complaint of one small thing. All I’m asking is to please help out with that, but I still love it. Always 5 stars. Amazing setup. Again, please do not take this as a negative thing. Developers, i love your game, and I hope for all the cool updates and improvements you make to be always as fun as ever. Chess is such a wonderful game! Please, keep improving this game as much as it is destined to be. It is such a fun thing. When I’m bored, I hop on and play many matches and never just go waah and quit! I love chess I’d never quit. Secret: this is by far the best chess app of all! I’ve tried other apps, but I got on this one and I’ve been playing for a year now, and altogether been playing chess for 3 years. Have a great time developers, and players. I’ll make sure to come back again. I write reviews to many apps, and this one is one of those few that get such a long review! Have a great day, everyone.
