Not inexpensive, but valuable
Given all the add-ons you’ll find yourself wanting, Pleco is not inexpensive. But it is high-quality, reliable, comprehensive, and legitimate. They know what their business is and the value they provide. I first bought some addons around 9 years ago, and I still use them today. It’s rare to say that about any app.

AMAZING Chinese Dictionary
Hoping for a PC version soon🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️
i love pleco
I’ve had Pleco for a year or so now and it is simply the best language learning resource i’ve ever used. it’s obviously way more convenient and usable than a physical Chinese dictionary, but it also replicates everything good about a physical reference book — it works offline, has almost no loading time, paid features/dictionaries are one-off purchases with no hidden costs. But then it’s ALSO a web browser you can use to navigate Chinese-language websites with tap-to-click translation, and it’s ALSO a flash card bank, and and and… I don’t find every feature equally useful, but I have progressed much faster in my independent Mandarin learning than I thought was possible when I started, and Pleco takes half the credit.

Only has one major flaw, the rest is great
The one flaw that it has, is that it labels all 成语s (chengyus) as idioms as well as non-chengyus.
So when you see a word listed as idiom, you will have go nto chatGPT to find out if it was a chengyu. It would be nice if the app distinguished between chengyus and regular idioms.
Other than that, its always been a go to app for me.

Best app
Best app to learn Chinese Kudos to those who made it happen
No automatic or cloud backup
First off, I absolutely adore this app. But right now, I am very angry at a critical feature that is missing - automatic cloud backup. I just switched phones and it was a hurried affair because I had to trade in my old one. Apparently, iCloud does not backup and restore Pleco's database. I was shocked to learn that Pleco only has manual backup options. It's 2024 - this is unacceptable. I just lost 3 years worth of history and can never get it back.

Response from developer
Sorry for the slow reply, and very sorry this happened. Pleco's flashcard data certainly should be backed up to iCloud, just like any other data on your phone - are you sure that you remembered to restore your phone from backup (rather than setting it up as a new phone) and that you used the same Apple ID?
The only app I need--one request!!
I've tried all of the other Chinese dictionaries and flashcard apps, and this one is the best and most comprehensive. I recommend buying the add-ons, especially the outlier dictionary. Super interesting to see the origins of characters. The prices are fair and one-time, which I really appreciate in a world of subscriptions.
One request: please make an instruction manual or something for the settings! There are so many settings and features, which is great, but no explanations of what they do and difficult to find how to use them online. I've been experimenting and realizing how much potential is in the flashcard system, but it's a very high learning curve to utilize it.
Otherwise, perfect app don't waste time/money on others!
