Better than Duolingo
When I told my aunt I was learning mandarin with Duolingo, she said “try Hello Chinese, it’s better.” And sure enough, it is. The teacher talks are amazing. Unfortunately you only get a couple of them for free, and you have to pay for premium if you want to hear the rest. You also can only do a few lessons for free, which I finished in about a month. Eventually I’ll probably pay for premium, but it’s too expensive right now. I like the stories that can be read out loud to you, with translations available (again, only a few available for free). The explanations of words and characters is cool. (e.g. the character for “good” combines “woman” and “child” because it was considered good to have a wife and children.) I’ve had fun with Hello Chinese. I still do Duolingo as well, because it has more repetition and it’s interesting to compare. And I get to compete with friends on Duolingo. But Hello Chinese has games that improve character recognition. Anyway, the people who would know tell me that Hello Chinese is more correct.
