Vocabulary only
Drops is NOT a language learning tool, it’s a VOCABULARY learning tool. They do admit this but it’s not emphasized. It will not teach you any grammar, conjugation, alphabet usage, or specific characteristics (male/female, formal/informal, dialects, etc)—you will not understand how the language actually works. The only thing drops can do is rote memorization of words and short phrases like a glorified set of flashcards. But by glorified flashcards I mean GLORIFIED. The design of the app exercises is so so good. The colors, sound effects, pictures, and responses tickle my brain juuust right. They make the process fun and I actually enjoy doing my five minute exercises. The word collection is a godsend because you can see the image with both languages but most importantly the pronunciation when you tap it. There is a good variety of topics too from which you can choose whatever you like.
For vocabulary learning only, drops does its job absolutely perfectly. I learned Spanish in high school and remember the basic rules and I can read it, but drops is expanding my vocabulary which is exactly what I need. I am an illiterate native Chinese speaker, so drops is wasted on trying to learn to read because I already know most of the words they show me (it’s like cheating). I still know nothing at all about Arabic, but I can now say random words at my boyfriend and he will understand them.
