Reviews of Memrise Easy Language Learning

  • New UI ruins the app

When I got this app over a year ago, it was great. Videos are excellent, the UI was lovely, I had so much control. I loved that I could choose to do vocab when I wanted. I could go through all the words I need to brush up on before diving into something else, on my terms. The new UI has changed this.
Now I can't just do vocab until I've reviewed all my words. I can do one or two vocab reviews of 10 words before the vocab section decides for me that it is time to learn more new things. I am trying to review what I have already learned before learning new things, why does the app have to force me to continue my last scenario? It's been so long since I've used the app, I need to review before I go into new scenarios and just fail every question. I have over 100 words left to review and I have to keep manually crashing the app in order to allow me to actually just. Do. Vocab.

Please change your UI so that I can just review my vocab until I decide I am done. I left duolingo specifically because they were doing this to me. I was no longer able to choose what I learned and when, duolingo chose for me, and if I happened to take a break and forget some things, then I have to wait until duolingo decides I am allowed to review stuff. That is incredibly frustrating! If memrise follows the same route and continues to cut me off from finishing my vocab, I will be cancelling my subscription and finding a new app that actually lets me choose.

    Developer Response

On the Home page, you'll still be invited to do Review and Difficult Words when our algorithm predicts a given word or sentence is likely to fall out of your long-term memory. We understand you may be looking to review words on demand. Rest assured we're listening to this feedback and are looking into how we can best serve this to our app users.
  • Okay, but lack of certain previous functionality drives me absolutely nuts.

I am getting some benefit from using Memrise, but one function that was available previously has been inexplicably removed.

When one goes to the Scenarios > Practice section and chooses a category, a scrollable list of phrases that have been already learned is shown. An earlier version of the app allowed each phrase in the list to be pressed and either a short video or audio (from the original learning session) would play to quickly reinforce pronunciation and provide a bit of context. It was extremely valuable for quick strategic review. Now those phrases in the list are “dead” and pressing does nothing. Why?! I’m now forced to hit a practice button at the bottom, which may not show the phrase I’m interested in hearing until I spend 5-10min going through other phrases that aren’t relevant to me. Also, the short video clips don’t appear in the practice session, meaning now the only time you see them are when learning the phrase for the first time. Then they’re no longer accessible.

I really don’t understand the rationale, if this was intentional. It’s an inferior experience and I imagine I’m not the only one who feels this way.
  • Bugs make it unusable

It was my favorite language app and I started a subscription, after each update it became progressively worse. It might be fine for Romance languages, but for Tibetan there are endless glitches, marking correct words wrong and not being able to type the alphabet accurately, make it unusable. I wish they’d fix it, it used to be a great app. I keep coming back every 5-6 months to see if the bugs have been fixed. Oh well, it gets progressively worse as they charge more, you get less until it’s unusable. They say they have to charge crazy high prices to keep creating content, yet they offer less content and the app has become progressively more unreliable. Lol. Maybe go back to charging less and restore earlier content that worked? UPDATE: Developer customer service tip—tone deaf copy paste replies are worse than no reply. Now everyone reading reviews can see how often you use this meaningless reply. It shows you don’t read and respond to users’ suggestions or complaints. You are most definitely not “the same Memrise” I knew and loved. Did you read the bit where I said Memrise is no longer functioning for the non Romance language I’m learning? LOL.
