Description of Saturn Atlas

Explore 3D globes of Saturn's moons Use pinch and finger gestures to manipulate a 3D globe of one of seven of Saturn's moons. As you zoom in more labels appear as finer detail comes into view. You can double tap on the labels to get more information about a particular feature. Saturn Atlas displays the approximate phase, axial tilt and central meridian of the selected moon from your chosen location and time, and renders these on the globe. You can switch to a 'Globe' mode that allows you to spin the moon around to see the whole globe. The feature database is searchable and can move the globe to a searched feature. The phase can be switched off to show the whole globe more clearly. The moon's globe can be shown with north or south at the top or inverted to suit different telescope views. Over 440 named features across seven moons are included. These moons are Dione, Enceladus, Iapetus, Mimas, Rhea, Tethys and Titan. The phase view shows the current view of Saturn itself including the tilt of the rings. You can swipe left and right on the phase view to go backwards and forwards a day. When you turn the device to landscape mode a wider view is shown with the moons in their approximate positions for the time selected. Date, time and location can be changed. There is also a realtime mode that will update to the current time. Atlases for the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are also available on the App Store!

  • Excellent Planetarium Atlases

Everyone can enjoy all of these atlases as works of art as well as reliable references. They are easy to use and fill the needs of astronomers of all ages. They are well worth the modest fee. It’s an investment in program improvements, and hopefully the creation of atlases for other planets.
  • Dreadful

This is an atlas of Saturns moons, not of Saturn itself. The navigation is clunky and does not use any of the intuitive navigation of the ipad. I have free apps which navigate better, show more detail and include Saturn inself, I was surprised at how bad this app was.
This app does not deserve the one star I was forced to give it.

  • Interesting

I found this quite interesting. What it does, it does quite well
    - Pictures of saturn's main moons, with surface details.

I was disappointed though not to have a large scale picture of Saturn !

While I understand that unlike the moons, Saturn has no solid surface - so a "map" does mean quite the same thing...

But to have a Saturn Atlas - with no picture of Saturn at all
    - too disappointing!

I want to see a "snapshot" picture of the planet - with the rings
That has to be the major missing feature...

Next - how about a Saturnian system view...
Eg a plan view... So we can see clearly which moons are innermost, what their sequence is, what their relative sizes are...

So there is more that this app could do.

But what's there is a good start.
