Best explanations...needs scratchpad

This app has better explanations and illustrations than the Sporty's app (which was my favorite and is still a better app for understanding the "distractor" answers).

One thing it needs is a scratchpad icon on the bottom toolbar that would bring up a blank drawing surface to let you work out problems. Otherwise you still have to have paper handy when you study.

Excellent For Test Prep

After several years of starting and stopping studying for the IFR test, I finally took it and passed with the great help of this App. Although I used the King video series for my primary study, it was the repeated practice of going through the test questions, that gave me both the knowledge and confidence to take and pass the IFR written with a score of 92%!
Thanks, I couldn't have done it without you.

An actual ifr prep, not a generic app

There seem to be three types of test prep apps on iTunes: 1. Apps from people you've never heard of who use plagiarized old test banks to make generic "multiple choice" apps. 2. Apps from sporty and Asa who you have heard of but whose apps leave a lot to be desired in the content and features department and 3. This dauntless superior app. Did it cost a bit more? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. This is the only app that is an actual prep.. The quality of the explanations is outstanding. I felt I really could learn the material and not just stupidly memorize. Their update is free for life... It's actually the only FAA test app that I saw that even has an update! I submitted a note to them of a typo and was pleasantly surprised to find it fixed 2 days later after an update. These guys obviously care a lot about their product.

Finally to the guy who said if crashed a few times... I found if my iPhone is on a long time or if I run too many apps ANY app can crash. Rebooting the phone fixes this. I have had no crashing at all and I have a slightly older iPhone 3GS.

This is the best app I have ever seen for iPhone. I scored a 98 on my IFR written after using it. Whoohoo!

Latest Version Crashes Constantly

I've been using this app for a few months and until the latest update in early December, it worked well. The new version added question buckets, which are great in theory -- no need to keep going over questions you consistently get correct. Problem is that the app crashes constantly and for seemingly no reason on my iPad running iOS 5.0.1. It crashes sometimes at the end of question sets, when advancing questions, when saving sessions for later, etc... Not every time, but it crashes for me several times a day. And -sometimes- when it crashes, it takes the questions and resets them all to the default bucket (3). Nothing like going over a 960 question set to pick out the ones you want to focus on only to have the app crash and lose your place. The question "flags" do not seem to store propetly either. Also, the updating the questions as is recommended at the beginning of each session seems to reset the buckets and flags without warning.

Emailed customer service two weeks ago and still no response. App is almost unusable in its current state.

Excellent IFR prep

There are some apps that basically just feed you the answers. This one stands head and shoulders above those since it actually provides deep explanations. Plus, it's fast and easy to use. Ever since we've gone over to ground school from Asa, our students' study and knowledge has noticeably improved.

This is terrible!

If it worked, it would be a good program. The amount of questions and the explanations are great.

It's just useless. I give up after two days of sheer frustration.

Since it crashes regularly which causes you to lose anything you were doing (especially when the iPad returns from sleep), and if you back out to look at mail or whatever it loses everything including anything that you told it to save (the questions that are saved are not what you saw the first time through), this app is...

HORRIBLY FRUSTRATING and worth nothing at all. Anything you pay for this is money in the garbage.

I gave up and went with American Flyers practice tests on their web site, on my PC (it's flash so it doesn't work on the iPad).

This is an absolute ripoff, and there are no refunds. This is way too expensive to even see for yourself.

Superb ifr prep

The negative reviewers here must surely be competitors planting fake reviews, since the app is awesome. The update works great, the interface is crisp, and, most importantly, the question explanations are rich and illustrated, unlike the useless ones in the other app out there. I scored a 100% on my instrument rating airplane and flight instructor instrument airplane using only this app.

Awful

If you use it to study and want all the questions, better pray you don't back out or it erases all your entries and you get to start over!!! I asked about it b/c there is a "start from a saved version" button on the home screen and they told me it would be fixed in a few weeks. Great! Just what I need whilst I take the written exam this week! Absolutely one of the worst apps ever. I'm contacting Apple in the morning for a refund!!! DON"T BUY!!!!

Needs More Work

The application has some good material but I was disappointed that it was misleading on the IPad application. It said that it was Ipad compatible but when i purchased it, it was not formatted for the Ipad and had a small image the size of an Iphone. When I increased the size of the image to fit the screen, the picture was less than clear. When panning the charts, it's difficult to interpret because all of the necessary info is not shown on the page. You should also be careful when purchasing the app not to purchase the wrong one. I accidently purchased the Private Pilot App while trying to purchase the Instrument Rating App. Both app Icons are identical. More work should have went into this project before it was released, expecially at the $40 price tag.

Okay, needs some work

I have tried every one of the instrument test apps. This is the most expensive one. It does have the full database of all the questions. Charts are not scaleable, which makes for a lot of panning around. I use it on the iPad and iPhone. I wish it were optimized for the iPad, it could really be nice. It has a nice format for picking which area to study. It also asks how many questions you would like to study, but it ignores your request and gives you all of them. There is an option for immediate feedback on questions, but it is not immediate unless you back up to the previous question and look. There is a misspelling on the main page. Lot of potential, but it seems if it was rushed out the door.
I was expecting a better product for the money.

Wish list:
Scaleable maps
True immediate feedback
Fix ability to select number of questions
Better graphics for iPad.

It does have the full database, which I don't think the others do.
