Hachette Filipacchi or Hearst or whoever, I will not be double billed!!!

I've been a subscriber to Car and Driver for 17 years continuously and was excited when I bought my iPad 2 to begin reading my favorite magazine on the device. It really was one of the main reasons I bought the iPad. Then I discovered the publisher's policy of DOUBLE BILLING loyal readers and fans of this magazine... I am also a subscriber to Motor Trend, Automobile, and Road & Track; but CandD has always been my favorite and the only one I have renewed every year without pause (even the "yellow cover" reformat that made so many mad a while back). I know that MT and Automobile have a different publisher from you and R&T but come on guys, don't let them get one over on you like this and potentially cause subscribers to leave over it. Having a news stand reader or a website visitor without an existing print subscription pay for a brand new digital subscription is perfectly fine; on the other hand, double billing existing print subscribers or even new print subscribers is definitely not. Your magazine is a five star piece in my opinion, though one star is all this app will get from me and all it deserves until this unfair practice of double billing is stopped.

A major rip off.....or maybe not (revision)

Not much good subscribing to a magazine that you cannot download.
Gets to almost 47% and then stops.
No contact information within the app. No recourse.
I guess I just blew twenty bucks.

Revision as of Nov. 27, 2011.......
I am upgrading my rating to four stars now that the app seems to be working properly and downloading is possible.
Once the issue is downloaded, the magazine is very readable and attractive. It presents the content in a very pleasant manner. The pictures and sideshows are very clear and well done.

LAAAAMMMME!!! Only because the support is nonexistent.

The lack of support for this app is ridiculous. The 'app support' button does not allow you to directly contact the developer. Instead, it takes you to the Car and Driver webpage where the support information there, in turn, directs you to Zinio support, which is not the developer of this app. If you are bored enough to read the comments on the bottom of that page, you will see a post by someone who says is part of the development team. I emailed him a week ago and have not heard from him yet.

AND... as a subscriber, I can download every issue available except for the July issue where I'm supposed to pay $4.99... really??? Awesome, app, crappy support. Way to soil a good magazine's name.

Am I the only one who had to download every issue again after updating to iOS5? Since the issues don't sync, can they be backed up so I can read them when I eventually kill my subscription... whenever I figure out how to do that. I'd ask support, but they don't exist.

Update to earlier review

I submitted a review earlier and complained that I couldn't get the issues - after I paid for a subscription. Well, it took a few days (processing maybe?) but I was able to download both the July and August issues.
I really like this app when I'm traveling because it frees up space in my checked luggage and it also offers video. I might suggest to some others that want Car & Driver to give them the app for free to wait for their subscription to end and then get this. It's a different form of media than the print version (and I see that Motor Trend is doing the same now). This is clearly superior.

One of the best magazine apps there is.

Reviewers who give one star because the download and install is slow for them don't seem to know that download and install time has nothing to do with the app, but everything to do with their network and their over-loaded iPad cache. The fact is, this app is really, really great. There is so much more in this than in the print magazine. Video, multi-level interactivity, slideshows, exploded graphics—more interactivity than the majority of magazine apps out there, and I download all sorts. All the issues are free at the time of this review. Don't believe the detractors.
