For the longest time I keep reminding myself to review this app. Anyway, highly recommended and the premium version is the way to go.
I love pretty much everything about this app. I like the spectrum type diagram style for each string, and how the frequency shifts from pluck to termination of the vibrations.
Love the massive selection of alternate tunings, the interface, etc.
The perfect little app. For best results when not plugged in, I position the iphone so that the bottom is resting on the headstock to pick up the vibrations. I've played around with different placements and this gives me the best results.
Holding the phone with your left hand securing the bottom part (with the mic) firmly against the guitar's wood while adjusting the tuners with my right hand gives me the best results. For my headless guitars, I hold the phone on the metal plate and that gives even better resonance.
Since the sound of a string in a noisy environment can be hard to capture by all tuning apps, I've found that they work even better by vibrations, where I think the buzzing of the resounding wood against the phone matches the sonic frequency of the string through the microphone. That's my theory anyway. The fact that vibrations work better than remote sound capture would probably support my theory.
FYI, if you tap the little (i) icon, you can choose auto detect string. I don't use it, but mention it because I think a lot of new users might be confused at first because the default setting requires that u first choose the string to be tuned. So u might sit there plucking a string and wondering why nothing is happening. Select the string and then pluck the note unless u toggle the auto-detect function.
Oh, and heads up. If you're plugged in and press the string for a reference tone, TURN DOWN YOUR VOLUME so u don't blow out your eardrums and jump through the ceiling. Has caught me off guard a couple times :) developer should default sound down to low levels to protect user hearing when headphone is detected.
5 star app. Get it.
