  • Very good, but needs...

    Reverse flash cards;
Language variations (eg. Oral or written language style)

I found a number of differences compared to a standard first year university text book (NCPR?), which is pretty official. Would be nice if it were a bit more consistent with regard to this.

Similarly, some of the language forms may more or less common depending on where you are in China; some indication of this Wouk be great.

  • Very helpful

I am currently taking a university level Chinese 101 class. This app has been very helpful. It has pushed my vocabulary far beyond that of my classmates and has made the learning process much more enjoyable.
  • Good

App is well made, only shows short hand writing though, but very good for extending your Chinese vocabulary!
  • Great!

This app is really great since I wanted to learn a bit of Mandarin Chinese since I was interested in their way of writing. This app is free. For a free app you get everything you could ever want: learn all the vocabulary and learn how to write their characters!! A great way to learn Chinese!!
  • Awesome app

This app is so helpful especially in learning other language aside from you're native language... I gave 5 star because I am hoping that you guys are going to make a korean language learner too. Nice App
  • Native speaker abroad - Not bad as flash card apps go.

I moved abroad to the UK from China when I was 4 and had to learn Mandarin without much exposure to other Mandarin speakers outside of my family.
So although fluency isn't an issue, my vocabulary is poor.

This is pretty good if you're looking to improve your vocabulary, but it **will not teach you mandarin** in a lesson based way. If you're looking for a lesson based app then look elsewhere.

Otherwise if you have a basic or advanced grasp of the language already, then this will definitely improve your vocabulary.

One gripe I have so far is that it mixes formal with informal words throughout... and doesn't let the user know this.

Another difficulty is that there are often more than one way to say something in mandarin, and this will only give one. As always, the best way to learn is to practice.

Go forth and find some Asian friends!

  • Simply Outstanding.

I have been practicing my Chinese with this app for 6 months and it has been the best tool out of all the language learning resources I purchased. Worth every penny!

The interface is easy to use, and my favorite feature is it tracks your progress. You can study for an hour, put it away and then pick right back up in the exact spot you left off. You rate each flash card on how well you know the term, so if it's a word you've mastered it won't show up as frequently.

Plus, you can search thousands of words and phrases anytime on the fly when you are in the midst of a real time conversation with a native speaker. The term pops up with the Chinese character and the sound bite with pronunciation.

Not only is this my favorite educational software, it is my #1 favorite app! Xie Xie.

  • Very good app.

This is a wonderful app for vocabulary memorization. Easy and fun to use. I did see a few minor mistranslations at some points and some examples would be nice good too...but overall an excellent addition that should be of help to novices and experts alike.
  • Natural way to learn

I found the ranking of the flashcards to be very intuitive and much more natural than other tools I've used.

Once I say I know something it comes up less often so I can keep progressing but the card is still there for review if I need it.

I also agree with the other reviewer about the audio being very useful. I replay it many times to get the sound pattern.
