Advertisement and tracker ridden

I was so excited to find this app… until I tried to use it. 30 second ads that there is no option to get rid of, and trackers setting off alarm bells ringing in my firewall.
Oh SBS, you used to be my main source of news and international movies, classy and ethical. Until you went commercial and became on par with any commercial channel.

Crashes

Crashes every time I try to open it

Response from developer

Hi Wal!! Thanks for getting in touch. This was fixed in v4.3.7. Please keep a lookout for our latest release which will be made available to you soon. Thanks ^JL. SBS News App

Edit: issues with back button fixed! Previously: Back button not working is frustrating

Edit: giving 5 stars now! Good content, minimal ads.
Previous review was:
Happy with the content but I’m having the same trouble, as reported by other users, with the back button on a new iPhone 12 - hence the low rating.
I was finding this frustrating enough to almost delete the app when I accidentally discovered that if I touch the topic (e.g. Australia, North America), the app returns to the topic menu where the main menu can be accessed. It’s not ideal and not an intuitive way to exit a story page but I’ve decided to keep using app for now.

UX flaw

No problems with the content of this app - it’s a highly reputable news source. But usability is an issue on iPhone 12 because the back button is located in the upper left, and gets muddled with the clock on the full bleed iPhone screen. Button is unusable, I can’t go back within the app. Needs to be fixed

Thanks for your patience PapaSaul. We have fixed this in v4.3.1. Enable app auto update so you're kept informed with breaking news and top stories from Australia and around the world. Thanks ^JL. SBS News App

Not compatible with new iPhone 12 Pro

The return/back button doesn’t work with iPhone 12 Pro. It won’t allow me to go back to the main page.

Also, just for feedback, when swiping right, I would suggest it would allow us to go back to the main page instead of just going through the previous news. This because some people are not interested to read about all type of news.

By bringing us back to the main page, it will allow us to pick and choose the news we want to know. By doing this, I believe it will be more user friendly.

Thanks

Hi Will, Everything should be working fine now as we fixed this in v4.3.1. We'd love to hear more what you think can be improved so keep the suggestions coming or email us apps@sbs.com.au. Cheers ^JL. SBS News App

Pic heavy layout. C'mon grow up.

I wish the pics were smaller and the layout linear rather than grid. Yes it's the fashion to use a grid/picture/magazine layout but there are still people who value words, info and ideas over fluff, especially in a 'serious' 'news' app. At least have an option in settings to adjust layout, remove images, linear vs grid layout. It's dismaying that digital decision making is dominated by the often diminished standards of a happily ignorant generation.

Return arrow still does not work!

Despite this being raised over a year ago, and despite a fix supposedly being issued, this basic function still does not work. Try going back to the previous page, it’s almost impossible. And if you launched the sbs app using the “search” function, then it’s even worse as the “return to search” function now competes with the return arrow. The developers should be sacked as this is a basic function that they can’t even get right!

Not a fan 👎

Highly reliant on video content after introductory heading.

Personally, I’d rather read articles at my own pace, which is somewhat faster than waiting for videos to load (which often they don’t), then scrubbing through videos to get to the meat of the story.

This app was quickly relegated to the second group page of news apps, and eventually deleted, after deciding to give it one more chance to impress.
It didn’t.

The only positive?
I don’t have to listen to presenters trying pronounce foreign names or places as though it were their native language.
It’s painfully obvious presenters can’t speak Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, French, ad infinitum, so why pretend you can.
Makes you look the class nurd trying painfully hard to impress others, and failing.

Hearing the US film director Martin Scorsese’s name pronounced in some unfathomable way that I’m sure even Mr Scorsese wouldn’t understand, was when I stopped watching SBS news on TV.

I had hoped this app would be closer to what SBS was some years ago, when Lee Lin Chin didn’t pretend to speak anything other than English.

Browsing the negative reviews, there’s no developer replies. Speaks for itself 💤

Great app, use it for all my news

Doesn’t have click bait articles which is a Huge plus, as well as all my current and up to date news. Highly recommend

Sorry but it’s terrible

I’d really like to read/watch SBS news but had to delete the app because it was always freezing on the welcome screen (not progressing to the news page). Since re-downloading it, I’ve finally made it through to see the headlines, but I can’t even find a search button anywhere... really needs more UX considerations.
