  • Page Scrolling Trouble

Love the content, but scrolling from page to page is difficult. It needs to be corrected.
  • The VFX source

An indispensable resource to have almost 40 years of VFX knowledge at my fingertips. Extremely helpful when I’m researching for the next episode of The Optical podcast.

Glad to be of help, and love your podcast!
  • Works fine for me, but wondering about additional content

Excellent app if you'd like to read the issues on your iPad. This is not desktop-or-laptop usable. It is only for iPad use. I'm curious however to find the interactive content other than being able to swipe down or through pages and press to view images larger. Is there video content available on any of the earlier issues? I understood that this app would provide additional things the magazines didn't have. Where is that identifiable?

  • Good content, terrible subscription feature

While the app is fine and the content is of a high standard, I have had nothing but trouble with the subscription feature. I have had to contact apple multiple times to have charges reversed on issues I should have received under my subscription. At this time I had to remove and reinstall the app. When I ran a restore through the app, issues that I had purchased were recognized. Issue that were covered under my subscription were not. So, now I've had to buy them and will then have to have apple reverse charges again. I simply don't have the time to keep wrestling with this and will not be re-subscribing.

It's too bad, because the content for Cinefex is great. However, if they are going to offer subscriptions, then I has to work correctly and consistently.

  • CBB

Using an industry term. CBB - could be better. There are some great uses of multimedia here and some wasted opportunities too. The files take a long time to download even on wifi. Unless it's some really cool behind the scenes shot-build or something, leave out the fully finaled scenes. We have the Blu-ray for that. We want the cool stuff you can't see anywhere else. Stills should be super hi-res or they are worthless. Looking forward to the back issues from Kickstarter. I really wish this app didn't have to live inside Newsstand. I really hate what Apple has done with it. It's just terrible. Cinefex is the only thing worthwhile in it!

  • Support is nonexistent

If everything works, consider yourself lucky because you certainly won't get any support if a problem exists. I sent an email a few days ago and no update to that email. Like another person mentioned, I'm getting an error after purchasing a magazine. The app says it's been purchased, but not downloaded. However, you simply can't download it because the app won't let you. All other magazines from Cinefex seem to be working. Other than the lack of support, I find the app itself, with videos and additional pictures, to be much better than the print edition. Fix the application issue and actually respond to people . . . and then you'll get five stars.

  • Almost perfect

BACK ISSUES: I'm a huge fan of Cinefex but I didn't start collecting until the late 90s, and by that point a lot of back issues were already out of print, so I'm really looking forward to the ability to purchase digital back-issues. However, this app has been out for a year and so far none of the back issues are available for purchase.

TEXT LAYOUT: Personally, I would prefer the ability to change font size or to scroll text instead of flipping pages. Also, it would be nice to transition to portrait for text reading but that's not as critical. The font size is a big deal, though, especially on the iPad Mini.

BUG: I experience a bug right now in which it prompts me for my iTunes password twice every time I start the app. And when I exit the app and come back to it later, it does not remember my place.

CONCLUSION: Overall, a very nice app. Cinefex is my favorite magazine, and this app has become one of my most oft-used apps. I love the quality of the images and the extra video content. Also, I like how the magazine is available immediately. I usually have the iPad version read completely even before the print version arrives in the mail. Keep up the good work, Cinefex!

  • Great Format for enjoying Cinefex

I've been a Cinefex Reader for years, and have enjoyed the print edition throughout. But the iPad Edition is now my favorite way to consume Cinefex. The pictures look even more vivid than in the glossy magazine, and there is tons of bonus content in the form of overlaid photos and terrific videos that make the visual effects come to life.

There are a few 'ease of use' issues in the subscription process and the downloads do take a while — but this is not surprising given the amount of high-quality content and videos in each edition. If you are interested in Visual Effects - this is the magazine app for you! Glad to have this available on my iPad! (It's also great sending the video content from my iPad to my Apple TV!) Can't wait until more back issues become available.

  • Cinema Heaven! - MUST HAVE APP

I've gotten every Cinefex since issue #1. It's that good. As I later became a graphic artist I found it inspirational for visual imagery as well as a great fun read about the movie craftwork. This app has it right in that the pages quickly swipe with no lag. The ability to see video content about the movie as well as the still photos (some stills showing a buildup of the process) is the right step for Cinefex. It elevates it past the print issue and is a welcome addition to the newsstand on my iPad. MUST HAVE APP!
