Content excellent but app makes it unreadable.
I concur with others that, although I love The Nation and its insightful journalism, the intrusive pop up ads make reading any article less than an enjoyable experience. I get that the subscription price is a bargain, and the publisher needs to rely on advertising revenue to make up the gap. However, something needs to be done to make the app more stable and not simply a platform to draw unsuspecting readers into watching a video ad. I am seriously considering unsubscribing. That would be lost revenue and a loss for me. Please do something about this app.

Stay away.
The app isn’t really usable anymore—don’t know if it ever was, but the last update was apparently 3 years ago (writing this in Dec ‘24). The ads will pop up even if you’re a subscriber, and as others have mentioned, make it nearly impossible to read the content.
Also, this may just be me, but this app makes my phone run very hot in a way I’ve rarely experienced (I use an iPhone SE 3rd edition, the most recent).
iPhone users: stick to the website, avoid the app.

Content good, apple app integration bad
The nation’s journalism has gotten even better recently so I would love to subscribe and read consistently… but I kinda thought if I bought a digital sub through the app using Apple account that the app would keep me logged in but no such luck. And since I wanted to avoid spam I used the fake email thing that Apple offers through the App Store and now I can’t get my login info so basically I should have just lit some money on fire

Insufferable
You can’t read one paragraph without a video ad taking over the screen five or six times. The most intrusive ads I have ever seen. It is a nonstop onslaught of advertisements. I understand the need to make money to keep the publication running, but when you cannot get through one short article because every time you close out an ad, a new one dominates the screen or the app glitches and brings you to the top of the page … what is the point of subscribing to the magazine if you cannot read the articles?

Love the articles
I truly enjoy The Nation, but the app tells me I have only 2 free articles to read despite being a subscriber.
I don’t have the energy to continue to fight against it… so consider my subscription a donation.
This is the second time I have subscribed and had to fight with the app… I’m done.

Fantastic news source, terrible app
iOS and iPad apps are virtually unreadable due to how severely glitchy the app is. Constant crashing or page reloads. Not to mention the ads populate do much real estate that many times I'm literally unable to read the text.
Video interstitials take over and autoplay with volume, and very frequently repeat with no ability to stop.
I subscribe and understandI'll still have ads, but the ad experience completely destroys my ability to use the app and read the content

Ads overrun the app
I’m a subscriber and the ads still overrun the app. even the log-in button doesn't work right (takes you to web, doesn't refresh app). the ads are so aggressive I had to click EIGHT times to clear the screen enough to begin reading. It’s horrendous. Great stories, but read them in print as long as the app doesn’t get its much-needed overhaul!

Works well on iPhone
Presents the magazine issues and articles in reader format, and even allows for exporting pdf versions. Of course, the content is stellar. The Nation is a beacon in the darkness.
Ads make for a frustrating experience
The app runs like a poorly designed website, with ads popping up or videos autoplaying, causing the page to snap to the top or disappear behind the player. It’s worse than a website, in fact, because at least a browser has a Reader mode.
As a paid subscriber, I expect a less disruptive experience with less intrusive advertising. But I guess even The Nation is subject to the need to squeeze every penny out of its online presentation. Or maybe this is a clever ploy to get people to read the print version, where the ads can’t force themselves in front of the articles.

Terrible ads
I love The Nation but the ads sometimes take over to the point of making the app unusable. I finally just uninstalled. Keeps asking me to login when I already am.
