Was good… now not so much

I loved Astrill for my first 3 months! It was great. Never had any problems. Also loved the speed test feature on my computer!

Then…. I don’t know what happened, but OpenWeb went down and it hasn’t been the same since. I’m in China, so my optimized servers are limited. Lately the service is terrible. Doesn’t matter what server I choose, none of them work very well. Astrill cost me a lot of money, so the fact that I’m paying for something that only works a fraction of the time really bothers me. As a graduate student, it’s crucial for me to have access to a reliable VPN. I’m really dissatisfied with the product. Multiple interactions with tech support has changed nothing. Even an email being sent out every once in a while to let us know what the issue is and what they’re doing to try to resolve it would make me feel a little better. Instead I’m left feeling like the problems aren’t being worked on at all and I’m stuck with a crummy VPN for the next 8 months.

It isn’t good anymore

It was the go to vpn for many years, however this year the quality has declined sharply, in recent months barely fit for purpose.

You need to disconnect and reconnect to a new server daily, often certain websites are still blocked, they have removed the server test and open vpn, the speed is often sluggish, and don’t put your laptop to sleep, it says it’s connected but you need to manually disconnect and reconnect to a different server and protocol.

There are now plenty of cheaper, faster and more reliable options.

No Veep can be number 1 forever…

The overwhelming majority of expats living in China whom use Astrill have had nothing but praises for it. Within the last year however, the price has gone up fifty percent, and within the last few months, their once rock-solid reliability for breaking through The Great Firewall each and every time is now but reliability standing in quicksand. Said reliability is what customers pay Astrill’s premium rates for, yet no other explanation was given for the recent outages other than “We’re working on it.” Being resigned to the occasional outage with a VPN is acceptable… understandable even. But the outages are a regular thing today. If that’s the case, one might as well go with the competition whom charges half for what is now the same or superior service.

Used to work a year ago, now it doesn’t

Like the title says. I can turn it on and stuff, but it doesn’t actually work.

From 5 stars to 1 star over the past 2 months

the company / customer service does not respond to emails. So much for “ here for you 24/7”. I’m just soooo happy 😢 I bought 2 years subscription. I have emailed 3 times and have given up. There are only 3 servers available at any given time. They mostly don’t work. Cannot download or keep a stable connection. Have paid for a back up vpn. What are You guys doing about the almost non existent service and zero customer care ? Subscriber since 2015. In China.

Awesome

Good…

…but needs to be accessible for all laptops, not only m1 or later

Service issues

It does work in China usually although I had issues getting it to work on my laptop. I sent 4 requests for help over a one week period which were not responded to, which I felt for the very high monthly fee they are charging, wasn’t acceptable at all. Astrill worked better on iOS devices in my experience. The interface is not so great as is the pricing but if you really need a vpn that works in the PRC, then it’s an option. Very few others work now although I have found a far cheaper and more versatile vpn now.

Do Not Purchase this Subscription!

Do not pay for an Astrill subscription!! It does not work, and they do not offer refunds!

Overpriced; and works in China

Then when I asked for support it was awful. No refund; the support was tickets being closed immediately.
