Description of InTune

Improve your ear for tuning and intonation with this beautiful app. • Improve your musical intonation — one of the most important skills a musician can have. • Leverage 25 years of academic research on how to train intonation. • Track your progress and compete on Game Center. • Add on beautiful instrument sounds, including piano, guitar, violin, cello, clarinet, banjo, flute, French horn, trombone, and trumpet. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING “A brilliantly simple game of precision hearing…ingenious. It will absolutely help you develop a more discerning ear.” — Voice Council Magazine “Very easy to use…a fun and useful addition to your practice toolbox.” — Horn World “There are a number of ear training apps available for the iPhone, but InTune has actual science to back it up.” — discchord “I have your app on my phone and love it!!!” — David P. Schurger, orchestra director, Indiana “Excellent...it’s made a remarkable difference this past year in my ability to rehearse complex 20th and 21st century music!” — Paul Piazza, conductor/composer, LA THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE APP InTune began as a way for researchers to test pitch discrimination, the ability to differentiate pitches that are close together. But then researchers discovered that musicians improved the more often they played – 3x faster than those who didn’t. Download for free and see if InTune works for you! HELP US IMPROVE! Reviews of InTune

  • Oh please.

The reason the description to the app is so vague is because the app is incredibly simplistic, and really just junk. Here’s what it is since the designers don’t tell you. You hear a tone, then you hear another tone. You decide whether the second tone is higher or lower. That is the entire program. I actually thought that it would be interactive, as in you hear a tone, then sing the same tone, or in my case play that tone on the violin. No. Nothing like that. Really just a sound generator.
  • Please add a way to replay the pitches

I use this for tuning practice and highly recommend it. The old version was better in my opinion, but I still like this version. I like that the pitches are not played as fast with this new version, but I liked the scoring with the old version.

I would love it if there were a way to hear the pitches played again. Sometimes a second listen is needed to make sure your brain is thinking correctly. Neither the first or second version has offered this. I figured that would be among the list of improvements foe sure.

Also maybe something telling you where your problem areas are… which octaves… and those could be used to drill down even further.
  • Must Have App

I remember this app from back in the day. I redownloaded recently and I’m very happy to see the expanded range of notes to hear, and the variety of instruments. This app is a fun way to test and improve your ear, and I highly recommend for anyone who wants to fine tune their ears.

My only complain is that some of the timpani sounds could be improved. The higher notes sound fine, but the low notes have so much impact and thud that it makes it really hard to hear the actual tone and pitch of the drum. Those low notes sound more like a bass drum than they do timpani. I think it would be beneficial if the timpani notes were played with a much softer mallet, as well as a lighter touch. That would create a more characteristic sound that mimics how a timpanist would actually play the drum.

I hope I can see that improved as that’s the only thing holding back my rating from 4 stars to 5. Again though, very useful app and definitely worth being on any musicians phone.
