Reviews of Spoutible

  • Dystopian nightmare

I was so excited for a new kind of social media where you could express yourself freely and not live in fear of harassment and hate. Sadly, Spoutible ain’t it. I used the website and then app for over a year and saw the true nature of the CEO. He micromanages every issue on the site and attacks users for any criticism or even for just questioning him, putting them on blast to his tens of thousands of followers. I have seen him hold pods, like Twitter spaces, just to badmouth and lie about users. He suspends or bans users for unknown reasons, never telling them or anyone what their infraction was. He is obsessed with the royal family so hope that is your jam. Also, he uses Twitter more than his own website so that tells you something. Spoutible is good for some lols at its CEO, but not for free speech.
  • Good concept, ruined by a lack of moderation

I was really rooting for Spoutible when I first signed up, tired of the endless political trolling, racism, misogyny, etc. at Twitter. Over time, however, Spoutible has become stale without any kind of algorithm or any informative larger accounts to liven things up. They seem to do a good job of keeping the bots away, which is nice, but without a basic effort at moderation the site is devolving into groups that attack one another and bring the entire experience back to (just like Twitter) largely blocking accounts just to keep your feed from being a bunch of spats, raging, and bickering. Some accounts appear to have been given carte blanche to harass others without any sort of accountability, which is suspicious given the site’s supposed credo of being a safe space. It became tiresome to observe, and if you’re not into observing the most base, middle school behavior of adults on social media, I’d skip this one. Spoutible is an interesting and noble concept, but human behavior and lack of coherent moderation keep it from achieving its stated goal. Last comment, the app is a mirror of the browser version, so if you’re looking for a true app experience you won’t find it.
  • The app is excellent the owner less so

I was a usable of the Spoutible app since before it was an app, when it was just a website. I enjoyed going on daily and interacting. The features were excellent and continually improving. However I use the past tense because even though I had been a member for more than a year with a solid A rating I am no longer able to access the platform. I have discovered that I was suspended with no notification or notice or anything because I made the unforgivable mistake of responding to a spout by the owner regarding the media publishing fake or doctored pictures about Kate Middleton. My response was not profane or offensive, here is what I posted approximately- “I’m sorry, I’m out. She is a woman fighting cancer. She is a woman with young children fighting cancer. Let it sink in” - that’s it. He deleted my response, suspended my account and kicked me off a platform on which I had been a member in good standing for over a year. So there you go
