  • this is a roguelike y’all!!

i always read the reviews for apps, & for some reason the apple store decided to put all these negative reviews @ the top. such as: the game is too random, it makes you weak unnecessarily, you have to play every character to advance, no replay value… as a huge fan of the roguelike genre i thought some people’s grievances just sounded like regular roguelike progression (fair enough, not everything is for everyone) but the negative reviews honestly made me a bit sceptical.

that being said i am SO glad i decided to try it anyway. this is such a fresh gameplay concept, and i love the art style and silly dialogue. each playable character has its own strategies & play styles to figure out: i just played for two hours straight JUST messing around with thief builds. the gameplay really evokes slay the spire (& even the character classes lol), and i have an embarrassing amount of hours in that game.

i don’t know how much the devs make off apple arcade subscriptions but i truly hope it’s significant. if you like roguelikes, deck builders, casual strategy, or delightful 2d storybook art: PLEASE try dicey dungeons. if you don’t: please try it anyway!

  • Purely luck based

There are times in this game where you will get completely screwed out of any plays for multiple turns in a row resulting in death, which negates all progress in that episode. I’ve been playing on “relaxed mode” which lessens enemy health, and I still find myself losing about 20% of the time. Now that I’ve lost an episode three times in a row from circumstances totally out of my control, I’m frustrated enough to delete this game and give it a one-star review. Maybe if death only took you back one “round” in an episode, it would be more enjoyable. As-is though, this game is definitely not for those who value skill over luck.

  • Fun game!

It’s in the spirit of D&D with a dash more humor. It’s more than just a fun way to pass the time; it’s a game I enjoy playing.
  • Fun until you start to realize…

The dice are rigged and are not really “random.”

If an opponent needs doubles…they get doubles…I tested this by exiting and entering the game and loading the same opponent 200 times and each time the opponent got doubles reliably when they needed doubles or if they needed a 5, they reliably got a 5, etc.

Your own dice are also not random and after 200 times, I always got the same starting dice (although rolling additional dice yielded random dice).

The game is fun, it’s a neat idea, but it’s disappointing that the dev seems to have “nudged” rolls in favor of bosses.

  • Rigged

This game is fun to play, however, I have won four levels and every time the wheel spins it lands on the skull. Seems rigged because the chances of that happening four times in a row are very slim.
  • Brutally unpleasant to play

Starts off fun with clever concept, creative options, promising strategies, and diverse options for building a character’s battle equipment. But the “randomness” kicks in hard and there is no amusement in endlessly losing, particularly when the dice seem loaded. This game has so much potential, but it quickly becomes a joyless slog.

  • It’s die. The singular of dice is DIE.

The title says it all. So weird to have them talk about a single “dice” like do we say “read this books?” or “Oh look, you are a geese?” No. But this game keeps saying “Burn 1 dice” and “oh you got turned into a dice” but it’s die. One die.
  • Great game but that has my biggest pet peeve

One of my biggest pet peeves in game design is when a game does not let you skip the tutorial. I’ve played dozens and dozens of hours of this game on other platforms, but I still had to sit through the tutorial when I downloaded it on my iPad. Why? It’s really not that hard to put a “skip tutorial” in the game. Yet so many game designers, including the ones who make this game, refuse to do it for some reason, and I don’t understand. (If you’re worried people might accidentally skip it and then get confused, there are plenty of ways around that too, like letting you replay the tutorial from the menu.)

All that said, it’s clearly a fantastic game, as demonstrated by the fact that I’ve spent so much time on it. But I’m on a mission to get game developers to stop forcing us to replay tutorials for games that we’ve already put dozens of hours into, so I’ve got to withhold a star here.

  • Sound is missing

The game seems very fun, but for some reason no sound is playing
  • I’d have given the game 5 stars, but…

For a game centered entirely around dice, they did so little googling that they didn’t realize “die” is the singular form of “dice.”
