Cool idea
It works pretty well, images don't look AI. They look very cool actually. It just can't get my face right though. My family it nailed so that's fun!
Downloading support
This thing had the courtesy to download itself to my phone. Then when I went to go check out what it was it told me it was downloading support for image playground. One downloaded it will be able to run image playground. I don’t know how huge this download is, but it has been several hours now. Maybe someday they will get the thing working.

Why Release This?
After I updated my phone to iOS 18.2, I noticed a new icon that looked like it was for some sort of low quality mobile game. It turns out it was Image Playground and apparently Apple foisted this on my device.
I tried the image generation and it has to be some of the worst AI drivel I’ve seen. It’s highly limited and sanitized. The images it generates are awful and bland. You are able to generate images of people in the style of BonziBuddy or a simple sketch. That’s it. You might get something in the background if you’re lucky.
I suspect this will be used for 30 seconds by most users and then ignored until Apple quietly discontinues it in some random iOS update.

Non functional
I started off trying to get it to edit a photo but it said it couldn’t generate it, I tried a more basic task after, and described a yellow flower for it to generate and it failed. The app doesn’t account for the space the camera and sensors occupy on my iPhone 15pro max and so text showing up at the top of the screen is broken by the gap. It’s not ready for general use

So bad it’s pathetic
I just cannot imagine what childish mind spent millions of dollars developing this children’s app. Apple intelligence is proving to be chronically underwhelming.
The photo editor is lifted from Aperture long discontinued. The Siri integration is so bad I can honestly say i wish it wasn’t there. If this is the best Apple can do with AI we have a problem. Chat GPT is better alone.
Why does anyone need this app? It’s just not for adults over 19.

Needs work
App makes pretty useless images. You can literally find better ai image generators on the net. Also fix the need to use your own photos with designs. Maybe I don’t want to use a picture of myself or other people I have photos of and just want a random image generated using a random human
What a joke!
I’ve used a couple image generators at this point. I don’t understand, how with the current competition out there, (i.e. Midjourny, SD or Dall-e and similar) that anyone at apple thought this was worth their customers time…
Didn’t even come close to the prompt… and in two cases, gave the exact opposite.
As mentioned, having played with a couple of the AI image generators out there, I expected significantly more from apple. Especially given that they’re just using OpenAI’s model.

Good but
Good it’s still in beta of those so if you get stuck on the screen, that is normal
Really not that good.
Seems to generate very similar images everytime. The images are very limited in scope. It’s like there is a library of defined images that are allowed to be slightly altered by the prompts. It says it uses “Apple intelligence” (aka “AI”) but it is no where near other AI image generators.
As for using people’s pictures and then using the predefined suggestions, take ‘astronaut’, it’s almost identical every time and simply crops the face into an astronaut’s helmet.

Worked, then didn’t, works again.
Downloaded fine, made a few emojis, kinda fun & kinda weak on managing expression or detail. The backgrounds & add-ons change the figures appearance uncontrollably so there’s that. Then the next day it wouldn’t load up after trying the app, tried several times but it’s froze saying download needed to run the playground app. Deleted the app and rebooted iPhone and it now it works again. Meh…
