Alternatives to Navionics® Boating

Reviews of Navionics® Boating

  • Looks like Garmin really is f..ing up their Navionics business. On purpose?

Long long term user of Navionics now looking for a better alternative. Using current app with older purchased chart folio. No active subscription. 1. App features are being more and more limited; can still make routes, but are no longer able to follow them. Greed! 2. According to new TOS, if I switch device I will loose access to my already purchased charts. Theft! 3. Signs that IT people and not real mariners are developing the app. Saw a review mentioning two factor authentication via email, and as an offshore sailor he wrote there was no access to email offshore. Support wrote back, «why not then send an sms to your phone». How far offshore does one have mobile phone coverage? Not very far - as most mariners will know. Incompetence! Look elsewhere. Mybe to TZ iboat or Orca.

After reading yet another b.s. response from support , my additional comment is; as far as I remember when I initially purchased the «app», there was lifetime access to the charts included. I also understand that with updated charts follow a cost, but if I do not want the update, Navionics should honour the contract they offered me and allow for access to the charts whenever I decide to upgrade device - as initially promissed.

Guess they think each buyer is a small insignificant entity to do with what the perfer. Let’s show them that consumers can vote with their feet.

    Developer Response

We are sorry to hear you feel this way. You can follow any saved route when using the app without an active subscription, if the map areas within the route were previously downloaded. Navionics charts are proprietary, we do not sell our charts outright. When you purchase a subscription, you are purchasing access to those charts for that specific region. The Boating app downloads are saved to the individual device storage. Adding additional devices requires a redownload of charts. Downloading map areas requires an active subscription. The two-step authentication is an option, and it is not required to log into your Navionics/Garmin account.
  • Licensing Change

This really is an awesome app with feature like the sonar chart (TM) depths, automatic routing, integration with MFD Navionics charts… unfortunately as of last fall the the company has now restricted to two devices. Load on one phone and one tablet for the boat and you’re done. This makes it really impractical, if not impossible for the average cruising couple to use. We load it on our boat tablet and then have to log out of either the account on my phone or the account on her phone to use at any given time. I think it’s ridiculous for cruising couple to have to pay for two different different subscriptions to have an easy seamless experience. Given this, we’re switching to use Aqua Map on our mobile devices which allows for up to five devices unfortunately we’re sort of stuck with still paying money to NAVEX for quality maps for our MFD, but exploring alternatives there as well to avoid having to give more money to a company that takes this approach.

    Developer Response

We are sorry to hear of your experience. The Navionics Boating app allows you to use your subscription on a maximum of two devices simultaneously. We value customers’ input and can forward your suggestion to our Product Management Team for review and consideration for future enhancements for our apps. Use the Submit Feedback feature within the app or email help@navionics.com with “2 device limitation-bobcurt” in the subject. Include your suggestion and an agent will gladly assist you.
  • I wish I could give zero stars - Now Totally Useless

I have been using this app for years when I paid $15 for it. That was the most expensive app I purchased at the time back then. It was most definitely a 5 star app for years. I have almost 140 routes saved and synced between my iPhone and my wife’s iPhone over the years with tremendous success. I was always very pleased with the detail for each particular lake as we boat on many here in the Midwest. Using my iPhone 15+ Pro Max I can’t even get maps to zoom in to show me anything other than a blocky outline of the lake. My wife’s iPhone 12+ Pro Max still has the high resolution on the lakes that we downloaded, but it will not download any other lakes that were wishing to visit. I don’t know what’s going on with Navionics, I just hope whoever the greedy people and HORRIBLE decision makers are who have absolutely ruined this app hold their heads in shame. I’m now looking for a new app as I can no longer recommend Navionics to anyone. In fact, I would highly discourage anyone from wasting their time or money with this app until they get their act together. HUGE MISTAKE AND DISAPPOINTMENT Navionics staff !!!! Fail

    Developer Response

Our Navionics Boating app has evolved in time, and in 2014 we introduced the yearly subscription for our coverage areas to give access to daily chart updates and app’s advanced features. Once the subscription expired, customers could still access previously downloaded charts or download new areas within their coverage, without the ability to update nor use the advanced features of the app. With the latest app release 20.X, new changes have been introduced to the app and now only active subscriptions have the right to download updated chart details and use advanced features. For more information, see https://tinyurl.com/mj6vn3cs The app now includes new features and has become a premium navigation tool offering the latest technology in chart updates, overlays, planning, navigation features and more. It offers the same charting experience and value as our premium chart plotter mapping products Navionics Platinum+ and Garmin Navionics Vision+ at a competitive price point. As we continue to focus on providing our users with developments enhancing their boating experience with innovation, we believe you will continue to appreciate the value and benefits the app brings to your boating experience now and into the future.
