OpenSnow: Weather Forecast

Thanks for using OpenSnow! This update includes: My Location Screen We’ve added a dedicated tab and screen in the bottom navigation for “My Location”. This new screen provides the current conditions, contextualized mini weather maps, the 10-day forecast, astronomy data, recent news articles, and historical weather for your current location. Mini Location Maps The new “My Location” tab and any location screen will now feature contextualized weather maps based on the current conditions. These “mini maps” will populate with animated radar if precipitation is in the forecast, nearby weather stations, fire maps if we detect smoke in the forecast, and much more. Fall Colors Map Time the peak fall foliage for any area in the United States with our new “Fall Colors” map overlay. The map is updated twice per week and animates from historical color starting in early September through forecast color ending in late November. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, tap “Fall Colors”, and scrub the bottom slider to find the best foliage. Offline Maps We’ve improved the performance of our offline satellite and terrain base maps so that you have extreme confidence when venturing into the backcountry. This includes higher-resolution map downloads and the ability to see map features like trails and landmarks. Get started by going to Settings > Offline Maps. Notification Settings You now have better control and visibility into the notifications that you’re receiving from OpenSnow and where you’re receiving them (email and/or push). This includes higher-resolution map downloads and the ability to see map features like trails and landmarks. Get started by going to Settings > Offline Maps. You can also tap anywhere on the map to adjust the center point of the rings to view the approximate distance of nearby lightning risk and strikes. Map Coverage Masks We’ve added a mask to all map overlays so that you know exactly where the data is available to view. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, select any overlay, and move around the world to see available and unavailable areas. Weather Stations > Wind Direction The "Weather Stations" map overlay now includes the wind direction under the "Wind Speed" and "Wind Gust" chips. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, select the "Weather Stations" overlay, and tap into the "Wind Speed" or "Wind Gust" chips to view the most recent wind direction. This update includes making sure the weather overlays on the “Maps” screen update to the most recent data and time when you quit or background the app, presenting a new screen when you tap into a map overlay from a Daily Snow or News article, fixing the animation order in the “Air Quality Real-Time” map overlay, and a few other odds and ends. This new widget provides multiple options to view the 7-10 day forecast summary, including current conditions, high/low temperature, and color-coded weather icons when inclement weather is expected. Get started by long-pressing your home screen, tap the (+) in the upper-left corner, scroll down to OpenSnow, and select your widget. Lightning Risk Map View the risk of lightning occurring in an area within the next hour and lightning strikes over the previous hour. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, select the “Lightning Risk” overlay, and scrub the bottom slider. This overlay is only available in the United States. Hail Size Map See the maximum expected hail size over the past two hours. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, select the “Current US Hail Size” overlay, and scrub the bottom slider. This overlay is only available in the United States. 3D Maps You can now visualize our snow, weather, and air quality maps in 3D to help you plan your next adventure. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, select your overlay and base map, and then tap the “3D” icon on the main screen to get started. Public & Private Land Maps View public and private land ownership maps in OpenSnow. This includes land ownership by federal, state, and local organizations, as well as by private individuals and companies. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, and then tap “Public Lands” or “Land Ownership” to get started. Weather Stations View the latest temperature, wind, and snow data from over 50,000 global weather stations. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, select the “Weather Stations” overlay, and then choose any chip to view the latest data. You can also tap on any weather station to view detailed charts and graphs from either the “Maps” tab or by going to the “Weather Stations” tab on any location screen. Current Global Radar Track storms worldwide with our new “Current Global Radar” map overlay. This radar is updated every 10 minutes and you can use the bottom slider to view precipitation detected over the past 2 hours. Tap the “Maps” tab, tap the overlay button, select the “Current Global Radar” overlay, and scrub the bottom slider to help you track ongoing precipitation.
