Reviews of Sunrise Solar Calculator

  • Struggles with location and notifications

After a couple of notifications, now all of the notifications come with a "please launch sunrise to continue notifications" warning, even if I had just opened it a few minutes ago. Also, it keeps setting my location to cities that are for away from where I am, for no apparent reason. I've opted to disable location access via iOS, since there is no setting for that in the app, and manually set it instead.

Update: even with location services disabled, it still sets my location to far away cities.
  • Mistakes

Says shortest day is December 5th. Everyone knows it’s December solstice not early December.

Reply to developer: try choosing a random city. The app has the wrong date for the shortest day of the year.

    Developer Response

    I'm sorry you're still having trouble with Sunrise. I've tried a number of random cities, and the app always correctly reports sunrise and sunset for all dates. This can be verified by searching Google for something like "Sunset and sunrise times for Chicago, IL (for example) on December 5" The times reported by Sunrise will be within a minute of those reported by Google (the variance is due to limitations of computer mathematical precision and the fact that both Google an Sunrise are rounding to the minute). Please note that, throughout the northern hemisphere, sunset times do begin getting later around December 5, but the sunrise times are also still getting later, and at a faster rate, so the overall length of the day continues to shorten until the solstice. Again, using Chicago as an example, and using Google rather than Sunrise: Date Sunrise Set set Day Length 12/5 7:03am 4:19pm 9hrs 16min 12/6 7:04am 4:19pm 9hrs 15min 12/7 7:05am 4:19pm 9hrs 14min 12/8 7:06am 4:19pm 9hrs 13min 12/9 7:07am 4:19pm 9hrs 12min 12/10 7:08am 4:19pm 9hrs 11min 12/11 7:09am 4:20pm 9hrs 11min 12/12 7:09am 4:20pm 9hrs 11min 12/13 7:10am 4:20pm 9hrs 10min 12/14 7:11am 4:20pm 9hrs 9min 12/15 7:12am 4:20pm 9hrs 8min 12/16 7:12am 4:21pm 9hrs 9min 12/17 7:13am 4:21pm 9hrs 8min 12/18 7:13am 4:21pm 9hrs 8min 12/19 7:14am 4:22pm 9hrs 8min 12/20 7:15am 4:22pm 9hrs 7min 12/21 7:15am 4:23pm 9hrs 8min * Solstice 12/22 7:16am 4:23pm 9hrs 7min 12/23 7:16am 4:24pm 9hrs 8min 12/24 7:16am 4:25pm 9hrs 9min 12/25 7:17am 4:25pm 9hrs 8min 12/26 7:17am 4:26pm 9hrs 9min 12/27 7:17am 4:27pm 9hrs 10min 12/28 7:18am 4:27pm 9hrs 9min 12/29 7:18am 4:28pm 9hrs 10min 12/30 7:18am 4:29pm 9hrs 11min 12/31 7:18am 4:30pm 9hrs 12min 1/1 7:18am 4:31pm 9hrs 13min 1/2 7:18am 4:31pm 9hrs 13min 1/3 7:18am 4:32pm 9hrs 14min 1/4 7:18am 4:33pm 9hrs 15min 1/5 7:18am 4:34pm 9hrs 16min 1/6 7:18am 4:35pm 9hrs 17min 1/7 7:18am 4:36pm 9hrs 18min 1/8 7:18am 4:37pm 9hrs 19min 1/9 7:18am 4:38pm 9hrs 20min 1/10 7:17am 4:39pm 9hrs 22min Notice that the sunrise time continues to increase past the solstice and, when rounded to the nearest minute, doesn't ever decrease until January 10, nearly three weeks after the solstice. All of the shortening of the day between Dec 5th and the solstice happens in the evening. Again, the above table was taken from Google, but the Sunrise app is in agreement (within a minute) of all of these times. Thanks.
  • AR feature is cool

However, the compass needs calibration in the app as it’s uniformly about 15 or so degrees off. The built in compass app on the iPhone is correct.
