  • Used to be great

…now most time spent trying to get me to subscribe to premium. Practically worthless now

    Developer Response

The app structure has not changed. The free version gives you limited access to all areas of the app. This to allow users to determine if the app is right for them and meets their needs. If they decide it is, they can then subscribe on a monthly or annual basis, or purchase the app outright. If you tap on a restricted element in the free app the subscribe / purchase option will appear. The appearance of this screen is determined by the users actions. Hopefully, you will find a free wine app that meets you needs.
  • Go to app for wine education

This app comes in so handy when we go on wine tasting tours. Either I use it during the tasting to learn about the varieties being served or I use it afterwards to look up the various terms that are used by the winery hosts. I am very much looking forward to having this app available when we go to Europe this fall, so many new varieties to sample.

I may be biased but there is scant information about the Canadian wine industry. The Okanagan Valley of British Columbia and the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario have matured into notable wine regions. Hence down to 4 stars on the app.

Thank you for your review and we’re glad you find the app so handy and helpful. We do our best to provide accurate information on a wide range of grape varieties and regions, as well as food pairing advice and recommendations and a unique cellar management function to record and track your wines in a visual and meaningful way. Your points on Okanagan Valley and the Niagara Peninsula are noted and will be reviewed in light of your comments. Your feedback is much appreciate and very welcome. Thank you.
  • Amazing tool!

This app is great and full of information right at your fingertips on wine style, pairing etc
I highly recommend! I use it all the time as a sommelier .

    Developer Response

As a Sommelier, a wine industry professional, we really do appreciate your very positive review of Pocket Wine Pairing. Independent reviews such as yours are very helpful to those who wish to expand their wine knowledge and understanding, as well as to find great pairings that elevate both the wine and the food. We strive to make the app accessible and valuable to all enthusiasts, from the wine novice to the wine expert, and reviews such as yours greatly support this objective. Thank you very much for sharing your views with everyone.
  • Sneaky upcharges

Limits what you can pair with unless you subscribe for a fee.

    Developer Response

The app is free to download to enable you to see the structure of the app and to sample the contents. If you like what you see you can take a free trial with access to all of the apps content and features – you can cancel the trial (or subscriptions) anytime: open Setting app > tap your name > tab subscriptions. If the app meets your needs you can then purchase it outright or take out a monthly or annual subscription. A simple analogy would be retail stores, which are free to walk into. You can have a look at the goods and then decide if you want to make a purchase or not. If you do make purchases the prices you pay are not “sneaky upcharges”, they are just the price for the goods you buy.
  • Food Choices

When i first came across this App many years ago i was impressed with the refreshing ease of use and variety of dishes. However nothing as changed. This could have grown to have been a fantastic reference for matching food and wine. Adding a few new matches each week. This is a real opportunity missed by the Apps creators.

Thank you for your review and feedback. There have been numerous improvements to the app in recent years, although much of this has centred on areas outside of the recipe index. Having said that, many new grape varieties have been added, which enhances the choices available when finding a good pairing. New dishes are in the pipeline and will be added soon. Your observation and feedback are much appreciated and help inform the update process. Thank you for taking the time to post your review.
  • Wine Nerds will love this.

I love being able to pick a wine to match food (or vice versa) straight from the app. I can scroll through my cellar from in the couch.

One of the few paid apps I’m glad I purchased.

The team behind this love Wine and are really responsive. Looking forward to the new features.

    Developer Response

We are “Wine Nerds” and obviously we do love the app. We set out to demystify food and wine pairing and to make it easy to find great matches. Saving your wines to the My Wines section of the app also allows you to add as many photos as you like to a wine. So, as well as photos of the wine, you can add photos of your meal, the recipe, the restaurant menu etc. Many thanks for taking the time to post your review.
  • Hard to use

I find the user experience is a bit lacking and hard to use. So much of the content is locked that it’s hard to get a good feel for the value of the app and I just don’t think it would be worth paying for a membership

    Developer Response

The free version of the app you downloaded is indeed quite limited, as it is only intended to show the structure and main content areas of the app. To get a full appreciation of the app you would need to select the Free Trial option, which gives you access to all the content and features. At any time you can opt out of the trial. Perhaps it’s worth mentioning that you can manage or cancel subscriptions to any app through the Settings app on your device. Here is a link to Apple’s advice page on this, which you might find helpful: https://cutt.ly/7nC1EFO. Should you take the Free Trial you might feel differently about the app, as it generally considered very user friendly and easy to use. Nonetheless, thank you for making your concerns known.
  • I work at a winery

People are constantly asking me what wine would go with what food. My winery works with a lot of different varietals. I am always looking up the varietal its characteristics and its history.

    Developer Response

Thank you for your review, which is much appreciated. As a wine professional your comments are most welcome. There is no doubt that good pairings elevate both the wine and the food, and a little knowledge can go a long way to enhancing our enjoyment. Good to know your winery works with many different grapes – variety is the spice of life.
  • A must for wine lovers

This is a fantastic resource for anyone who enjoys wine or simply wants to know more about it. The developer is helpful and responsive to requests such as adding lesser known grapes to his database. The more I use this app, the more I enjoy and appreciate different wines and food pairings. Highly recommended!

  • A bountiful resource with great interface!

This iteration of pocket wine pairing has been such a bountiful resource for me, my partners and friends. It allows us to dive deeper into what we’re drinking, learning and discovering all kinds of fun facts about geography, food pairing, and wine culture around the world. I love the universal searching function (search countries, wines, grapes, notes, etc...) and that you can search for wine choice by food dish or food dish by wine choice. Love and highly recommend this to everyone who is curious and enjoys wine!
