Has potential

Huge rpg that becomes a bit of a grind. Idiotic backstory that I resent having to click through, in fairness I suppose most dungeon/ rpg's are the same.
Think I took a different route somewhere that the developers didn't anticipate and the story got mixed up, plus much extra battles in an already overloaded game - so time to delete.
However in fairness that's around 30 hours play and I am still in chapter 2 of 4 - wow. An extra star for giving us a demo version- so rare these days.
Some improvement would be gained by letting us buy the optional characters without restarting, no one in their right mind is going to start this all over again.

Fixed, Great game support!

Every time I try and move it says path not found and my team is stuck in the krellin deeps. It's very frustrating tapping on every square and not being able to go anywhere. Game was fine before last update. If fixed it would be five stars, until then it will sit in unplayable condition. Started a new game to see if that helped, same issue. Can't move in or out of battles. Very frustrating to see a great game rendered unplayable by an update. Playing on ipad air.
Edit: The bug was fixed within a day. Not many developers support their games like that. Game is awesome again, and I can move! Thank you!

Excellent Improvements

When I first picked this game up it was a bit meh, to be honest. It dragged on a lot and I didn't get very far.

Fast forward a few years and this is one of my favourite games to play at the moment. I'm about 50 or so hours into the campaign and barely halfway through the story ๐Ÿ˜ฌ! What I didn't realise in my initial playthrough was how the map opens up as you get into episode 2, becoming less linear and story choices start appearing that affect the rest of the game.

Combat and exploration is much faster these days and keeps the pace of the game up, and while the game definitely gets more interesting the further you get the start is now much improved since release.

Combat is interesting and varied, and boss fights in particular can get very tense - I'm still working on my strategy for the larger set-piece ambushes and boss battles.

Overall a sprawling well-executed RPG with dedicated developers I can easily recommend if you like turn based tactics.

**UPDATE**
I didn't buy HoS until after Templar Battleforce was released, so I didn't get to experience all the growth this game has gone through. However, it has received 8 updates since I purchased it, each making the game run smoother, tweaking things, general quality of life enhancements and a few updates with added content. With these 8 updates, it has improved quite a bit. And 8 updates ago, I considered it one of the best strategy RPGs in the AppStore. While I wouldn't put it above Templar Battleforce, that's only by setting/story preferance. The gameplay here is just as solid, challenging and entertaining as the later. If you're looking for a turn-based strategy RPG that's deep and offers up an insane amount of content (120+ hours!!! - and it doesn't just slog on or throw extreemly convoluted [and ultimately close to meaningless] upgrade/craft systems at you like some other 100+ hour SRPG titles...), this is one you should definitely check out. If you don't like the price point, you can snag the free version and pay for each of the 4 episodes individually. Get sick of it? Don't worry about buying any more episodes... both are consistantly updated, so you don't have to worry about not having something the other version has either. Great stuff. Developers like this are incredibly easy to want to support. GRAB THE ELITE STRATEGY RPG BUNDLE!!!! Totally worth it...

*original review*
My first experience with the Trese Brothers was through Templar Battleforce. When that came out, I looked up previous games by this unknown (to me) dev team, and saw that all of them had received some INSANE post-release support through updates. After that, I jumped on Templar Battleforce, and wound up LOVING it. I haven't completed it yet, but once I do, I'm sticking with it until I can beat it on the hardest difficulty (of which there are 7!!!). Anyway - a week later and Heroes Of Steel is on sale - can't beat $2 for a game that has grown SO SO SO much since it's original release (and isn't even done yet!). I (unfortunately) never had a chance to play this game pre-version 4, but ATM, it's killer. It shares a lot with Templar Battleforce (though TB seems to have a deeper skill tree, kinda like their other game, 4X Empires), but they are totally separate beasts (kinda like Rodeo Game's Hunters and Warhammer games). Anyway, if you're into Tactical/Strategy RPGs, this is definitely a game you should check out. The added characters are kind of like Warhammer Quest's extra characters (in that they don't unlock any new areas, but do have completely different skills and weapon/item equips that you can mix in with your strategy, while removing part of your previous strategy [the character whom you'll be exchanging for the new one]). I can totally see it adding a bit of depth and definitely to the replay value (I have no idea how much the story changes based on who you're playing with as I haven't completed my first game yet)... so chances are I'll be picking them all up at the end of the story. =oP
The Trese Brothers can safely say they have another fan that will jump on everything they release in the future.

A Constant Battle...With The Camera

Heroes of Steel has a lot going for it.

The turn based combat doesn't blow the doors off the rpg stable but it is solid and fun.

Two issues for me. Mission design. Each level is a huge map that frankly becomes a slog. Bite sized dungeons and cocktail sausage quests i would have enjoyed so much more.

Looking at the same dank tile set, hour after hour, shuffling your heroes from one battle to the next can get tedious quickly. Smaller more finely crafted dungeon quests would have served the game mechanics so much better.

And the camera. Please let me control it. I click on a character, use an ability, the enemy moves, I sneeze, the phone rings and the camera shifts. Just slightly. A wobbly yo yo effect to and fro designed I'm sure to send me gurgling mad.

It's working.

Three stars then. Two for the game and one for the bout of Cthulhu madness.

Great RPG!

I've played this game for a few months at this point, it's a great pass-time!
I recommend this game for players looking to experience a story driven, classic, turn-based RPG. With 8 unique characters with deep style customization there are many play styles.

I don't have many complaints for the content offered, though I have noticed a few pacing issues for players who are looking to set their own pace. I like the grouping system for characters, though I wish that they automatically regrouped after changing instances, dialogue, resting, and battle (it's easy to forget the rest of your team on one side of the map located too far away from regrouping.

Seriously, if you're considering this game, get the free episode and know that it picks up once the training wheels are removed. It is amazing!

Old school

Reminds me of d&d and that's a good thing:)

Great!

This is one of the best rpg's available for the iPad that I have played. A massive game with controls that are perfect for the touchscreen. Turn based combat that requires real strategy. The only fault I would comment on is that health and mana potions are hard to find so it is very necessary to spend most of your gold in shops on them. The developer is constantly patching the game. There are some iap's but none are needed to play. I bought some simply to support the dev. Highly recommended if you like turn based combat rpg's.

Buggy

Great game to play until you get into a cavern with no way out. Currently have a high level party stuck in Sanctuary and the exit doesn't actually work. Looks like I am moving on from an otherwise entertaining game.
