  • why is it designed this way

I recently downloaded (AND PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR) this app to use for assistance in reading books. There seem to be so many poorly designed aspects of this app that are making it tedious to use.
    1. When I photograph multiple pages and allow them to process, then try to add more images to the existing file, I can only do it one image at a time.
    2. The automatic photo feature just does not work, period.
    3. Half the time in manual photo mode using the volume buttons fails to work to take the photo, but at random times it does work.
    4. If I photograph multiple images and allow them to process, then go straight into listening to them, the reading accuracy is much higher as the app reads directly from the photograph. However, if I close the app or switch files for too long the images convert into PDF-looking files and much of the text becomes gibberish.
    5. The incessant refocusing in the camera app is frustrating because I have to try to time when I press the button, or else it takes a blurry photo.
    6. Only one voice option.
    7. Button symbols are bizarre and difficult to understand, I don't use any other text-to-voice converters so I only have the visual cues.
    8. It is difficult to upload a file, I still cannot figure out how.

I've only had this app for four days and have already run into so many issues. Why does this cost $100 if it barely functions? I'm a poor grad student.

  • Horrible....just horrible

Horrible. What happened to this app? For some reason I cannot change the English voice to anything but Fred. I am not impressed with the new user interface either. I can use it however it is not as straightforward as it use to be. it just seems cluttered. I agree with other reviewers that saving files and importing them is needlessly more complicated. My biggest complaint with this app is the fact that I can only use Fred using English. There is no way I would pay full price for this app now.

Thank you for your feedback. Hope we can help you with your biggist complaint concerning the voice Fred. 1. Go to “Settings > Reader Settings > Select speaking languages” 2. Search “English” in the list and make sure it’s enabled. 3. Click on the “i” icon next to the “English” to open a list of all English voices installed on your iOS device. 4. Select the voice you want to use. 5. If you don’t see the voice you’re looking for in the list, you should install the voice on your iOS first. Our developers are working hard to make the import more userfriendly. More news soon.
  • Ever since Ios12

I miss the easy way you use to be able to access imported files from another app, it use to be that explorer was at the top of the screen and tapping on this instantly opened your imported file. Also ever since IOS12 the app will throw you back to the home screen upon launching however it remains active, going to the app switcher and taping on it will put you right back at the home screen.
Other than that it is a very accurate app and I know yall willl fix the IOS12 issues

  • Beware of most recent version

The KNFB reader it originally was a very easy to use and user-friendly application for the visually impaired. With the most recent release, the functionality of the application has to graded, it is much more difficult to go right back to taking pictures of the next page, it takes 3 to 4 times longer to swipe through all the screens to get back to where you need to be to read the next page and many of the features which are never used seem to be highlighted. Beware as it is not worth its current price.

Indeed the app is now made for visually impaired and other struggling readers. Can you please check your settings to apply default settings for users of the VoiceOver screenreader. There are 2 options for making pictures of the next page: a. Put the app in "Multi page mode" (toggle button on the Camera screen) and take all photos after each other. After processing the batch you can read the document. b. In "Single page mode" you can use the "Add page" button in the toolbar at the top of the Reader screen to insert an extra page without losing the current page. Note: If you have only taken one photo, you will be asked to save the file first. Please note that we are working hard on the release of 3.1 to fix some issues.
  • App for visually impaired people that was very good, is now very, very bad!

After latest updates, app is no longer producing reliable information. Instead of giving text, it automatically goes to PDF. You then have to switch to text in order to get that mode. And when you do that you get gobbledygook. It appears you’re now have to switch to text mode in order to get text to speech. However even if you do that, you still get gobbledygook. Fix this app! Now using seeing AI as it is much more reliable and easier to use. If I could, I would try and get my money back for this cayenne FB unreliable app. I gave this app a rating of one. However if I could I would give it a -5 because it is now so bad.

We want to help you to have a better user experience with the app. You can set KNFB as the default file type: Settings> Camera settings> Default file type: KNFB Alternatively, the default settings for VoiceOver users can be chosen, making the setting optimized for text: Settings> "Apply default settings for users of the VoiceOver screen reader". Confirm the settings: click on "Yes". If a PDF file contains no embedded text, you must choose to do text recognition. Click on the "OCR" button that is located at the far right of the top toolbar. Then you will see the OCR window that you also had in version 2.9 and you can start the text recognition. If you have more questions, please contact support@knfbreader.com. We are glad to help you out.
  • KNFB 3.0 Awesome

I like everything I’ve learned about the new version. The access to one drive and Dropbox is great. Batch processing is greatly improved—telling me how many pictures I have taken. Saving and deleting files is now stable. Having the option to save and view files as PDF is a good addition.
  • KNFB Reader v 3.0

I have been enjoying the new features of Version 3.0, especially now one can save file in othe cloud storage services such as Microsoft’s One drive and Google Drive besides dropbox.I like the layout of the screens and the speed of processing images that are taken.
  • Speach Rate Adjustments Are Bad

In a recent update the speach rate settings are bad. First of all the range of speach rate is unnessessary. From way too slow to way too fast. Secondly, when set on 48 is normal (for me), but slide it to 52 and it's way too fast. ???? Lastly, when I'm finally able to get the speach rate set it goes back to the default setting every time I close the program. The default setting is insanely slow. This whole "Speach Rate" issue is very frustrating and needs to be addressed. Otherwise the app works well.

Update: 8 December, 2017. The first few words frequently come out as unreadable text (symbols). This app is good, but for $100 it should be MUCH better and get more frequent attention and updates. Still 2 star at best 😒

  • Reliable and fast

This app provides fast, accurrate, & consistent access to printed text by taking a picture and reading it back verbally. I love that it provides instant access through a Braille display. This This app provides get access and is well worth the value.
  • One of the apps i couldn't live without, best money i have ever spent.

Best money i have ever spent, this app is so diverse in situations and what it can read. Its far better than any mainstream iPhone ocr app, and better than other specialist cheaper and free ones for people who are visually impaired.
