  • Does not work with Apple Watch 3 GPS

I just spent four days in Zion Park hiking and was excited to use the app. Do not download or use this app. The mileage and elevation tracking are grossly off. For a 7-mike hike, the app recorded 20.8 miles! For 1,400 feet in elevation gain, it recorded 2,800 feet in gain. I contacted Trails support, sent both days worth of tracking data from their app and they simply said they cannot resolve and told me to request a refund from the Apple App Store. I wrote this I hoped that it might save someone the trouble I just went through as well as the disappointment of not being able to track a few epic hikes.

UPDATE: Trails responded to my reviewing claiming I did erratic zig zagging causing the error. Any person who hikes inclines at altitude knows this is the norm - they’re called switchbacks. If an app cannot track someone cl moving switchbacks then it should never claim to be a Trails app.

    Developer Response

We are sorry you've experienced issues with our watch app. We looked into the data you sent and noticed that the system-provided GPS data included erratic zig zag movements* that directly cause the irritating statistics. Among thousands of users, this is the first report of this kind on Apple Watch so we do not have an explanation or solution for this yet, but we are of course looking into it. We always try hard to resolve show-stopping issues like this one, but unfortunately, it is not always possible short-term. Since you asked for a refund, we naturally explained the necessary steps to request it. * Update: We did not mean to indicate that you actually performed these movements, just that the GPS sensor reported them. These errors/inaccuracies can be caused by hardware or (system) software issues, misconfiguration from our app, or anything in between, and that's what we're investigating. We apologize if our previous response wasn't clear on that part.
  • Download, you won’t regret it

Trails is a great app for tracking all your hikes. I have been using it for several years now and they have really improved the app. I would suggest upgrading to the pro version as it’s reasonably priced and you can download very detailed maps for those hikes without any cell service. The companion app for the apple watch is great too.

  • Nearly Flawless

I love this app. The interface is clean and intuitive. The subscription fee is VERY reasonable. You can easily add photos, waypoints, notes, etc. during hikes, or after the fact. Trails is a great app for outdoor adventures!

With a few small improvements, I'd give it 5 stars:
    1. It would be excellent if they added an iPad version.

    2. I'd like to see an easy way to sync between devices.

    3. For imported tracks (GPX), it would be nice if they showed up in the activity categories (e.g. "Hiking" or "Biking"), not just under "Imported Tracks".

    4. Make it easier to switch map types. This is easy while recording, but when not recording, you have to navigate through the app settings.

    5. Add a route-planning feature.

  • In my top 5 apps.

I shuffled through a lot of different apps of this type. This is my all time favorite. Had everything I was looking for here. All the details I wanted to know about when I'm out, and very simple to use. Love using with Apple Watch.
  • Just what I neded for tracking hikes

Have used the app extensively for a year now, tracking each hike long or short. Has been great even during hikes to follow and select the right trail.

Very satisfied with the relative accuracy and will last up to seven hours before killing your phone.

Only improvement I'd like to see is make text on maps bigger so my old eyes can read it!

  • Go for it!

I love this app. It is a great addition to the Apple watch, and works very well as a trail running app for the watch. I live in the mountains and run with it almost everyday. I have been very impressed with the balance this app finds, between having a clean interface, and having a good depth of features. I love the options given in run on the watch, and then the detailed stats you can get afterwards on the phone. Having Elevation gain is a great feature and seems relatively accurate. I also love the great web display when sharing routes or tracks with others. All in all, this is a very nice app for outdoor sports, and i would recommend it for serious runners, not just people who do light jogs. Lastly, the support i have had with this app has been fantastic. I had a few questions and comments, and they were promptly answered with good feedback. If anyone is wondering if this is worth the subscription, it certainly is, go for it!

  • This app shines!

Got this for logging trails in remote areas of Colorado. Maaaaaan, this thing is solid!! It has worked flawlessly for the last year in areas where cell service is nonexistent. Works in the background too and doesn't interfere with any other functions.
Opted for the 'pro' level to be able to export and share saved routes. For 5 bucks a year, no automatic renewal nonsense and great customer support (read: directly answered a concern here in the ratings ) you can't go wrong!

  • Stellar Product

I've been using Trails for the past 2 years to record my hiking and backpacking trips. I haven't found a better, free, product available on the app store since I installed Trails.

I use Trails online and offline and it works great for both. Last weekend on a backpacking trip, I recorded 9 miles of trails over the course of 5 hours and the app only used 20% of the phone's battery. With some small adjustments, plus airplane mode, tracking wilderness trails is easy and efficient.

On longer trips I usually bring a backup USB battery charger and I almost never have to use it because this app is so efficient.

To date I've tracked 200 trails and about 500 miles with the Trails app!

  • Fantastic App

I've used for skiing and hiking so far and it has all the basic things you need to track your activity including altitude and speed.
You hit start and forget it. It runs in the background till you stop it. Love it.
  • Best of its kind

I have tried out just about every tracking app in the App Store and Trails is quickly becoming my go-to. The other apps have had reliability or battery issues, or offered a less elegant review and sharing experience. Trails seems to excel with all those issues and more. Take the pro option - it is cheap and sans subscription I believe. Another advantage for the user.
