  • Structure

When I was in my twenties, I taught 10+ people how to fly a helicopter, from zero experience to a private, commercial, instrument, instructor, etc. rating, using a structured program. Works almost every time.

When I tried taking guitar lessons (3 different instructors) in my advanced years, the instructors had no plan, no structure, no stated goals. I spent a good portion of each lesson watching them display their talents. Then another third of the lesson sitting and watching them decide what they wanted me to practice for the next lesson. It just didn’t work for my mindset.

I’m sold on this program. I think they are doing it the right way.

  • Great tool for learning guitar or improving your chops.

I’ve been learning to play guitar for 35 years and so far this program for learning is the best thing for me. There are always new things to learn. From warm up exercises, to different styles, to teaching songs the way they were played on the record, writing songs, and solos. If I’ve ever had problems with the app, I’ve had help with them. No problems. It works for me.

  • Great learning material, terrible app

How do get back to video that is playing if i navigate to the home page and can still hear it playing in the background.?
I’m on the last lesson in a section. How do i skip ahead?
Where am i in my course? Nothing is numbered.

The website UI is really awesome. And this app still has a long way to go. I get lost in it.

  • Learning song section can be very frustrating to use

Some instructors spend too much time talking about theory and other things mixed right in with the middle of the song instruction, irrelevant to actually learning the song, and then fly way to rapidly though the chords, progressions and riffs, making learning difficult and multiple rewinds and replays necessary. (Example; Behind Blue Eyes by Mark Olesky. )

There is no way to mark or loop song sub-sections, so it is hunt and guess tryin to find the section you want to repeat without wasting time listening to the irrelevant taking and or parts you already know again and again . The theory may be interesting , but should come in separate sections, NOT in the middle of trying to learn to play a part of the song. Songs should be broken down into smaller sections for learning , or have ability to mark and loop sub-sections so you can repeat as needed.

On the plus side, transcriptions and techniques are generally good, except for songs with multiple guitars in the original . “Just play guitar 1” is a cop out. There are usually very good ways of combining multiple parts for solo.

Hi there. We definitely appreciate the feedback. Just in case you did not know, looping is part of the app. The icon for looping looks like a circle with an arrow. As for songs with multiple guitar parts, we try to teach all of the guitar sections in a song, and then offer an option for playing a song with a single guitar. But if you want to learn all of the parts, it's in there as well. Otherwise, your comments are really helpful and gives us a better understanding of what users are looking for in lessons. Thank you!
  • Great content but poor app

It’s a shame this app with excellent content is almost unusable. The app’s buttons (back button etc) when in a lesson frequently become unresponsive . The video control buttons disappear randomly. And there is no way to play the videos in landscape mode, which is basic stuff! I am using iPhone 6 with latest iOS. All in all the app quality does grave injustice to the awesome content. At the minimum, the unresponsive buttons, disappearing video controls (pause, forward/rewind, no skip back 10 seconds!) and lack of landscape mode video must be fixed on priority. Eventually the app must rewritten by some quality/experienced app developers and experts in mobile app user interface/experience . The great content in the app deserves better software for presenting it! Had it not been for the awesome content, I would have given it 1 star.

Hi there. Thank you for the feedback. We're working on improving the app and your feedback will be passed onto the rest of the team!
  • I’m a beginner

There is no doubt the content I encountered so far and the teachers are great. I enjoy the lessons and practices and try to use the app on the iPad everyday. I even dropped fender play because guitar tricks is so much better.

But, the user interface and experience on iPad is lacking. 1. It’s really important for me to keep track of where I was and my progress as well as history of usage. While this is available on desktop and web, it’s not on mobile. The need to keep going back and forth from app to website to look at progress and history so I can jump back to a section or continue where I was is the reason I only gave 3 stars.

I prefer to use the iPad for everything and I’m sure the future is in mobile, so please make the UX friendlier and easier.

I’ve been trying to learn/play for about 22 years now, the lessons put forward by the teachers here are amazing, I’ve been using the “I’m a bit more experienced” section for about 9 days and the way the tutorials are set makes for quick and easy learning, before I was a little stagnant and frustrated, these lessons have taught me how to arrange things I already knew and a lot of new things, I sit down with the lessons for an hour or more each day and every time I walk away wanting to play some more, my fingers are always on the move even when I’m at work, a truly amazing way to learn guitar or just to further your journey, well worth the money, thanks guys, keep it up!!!

  • The start of a long journey, but with great guidance...

Decided after owning an acoustic guitar for 4 years, and not getting past some self taught basic chords, that support was needed to progress. Checked out several app based options but this looked far the best for an absolute beginner.
Took a deep breath and signed up for a years membership :-)
Only going a week, but have now worked through the basics ( first real learning was I was holding the guitar wrong!) and up to learning simple chords.
The structured learning plan makes sense, and navigation to past/ last lesson is straightforward, so easy to pick up where you left off (or go back a lesson or two to practice again).
The tools are there, so now up to me to invest the time, but I feel confident I will put in the hours to do so.
Also should mention the email contact from Billy, the Guitar Tricks Support Expert, who explained some details of membership via app, that were not covered in the website. Thanks Billy!

  • Please fix full screen 🙏🏻

I love the app so far and the content is great, but every couple lessons the video options disappear and there’s no way to get them back. When I tap on the video, no options come up, and so I have no way to put it full screen. Unfortunately, all I have is a phone to access the website and watching on the tiny window that shows up is pretty difficult. Would be greatly appreciated if this could get fixed 🙏🏻

  • Senior, rank beginner.

This app may not suit the needs of everyone- but for this senior total beginner it is just the thing. Been taking and repeating beginner lessons virtually daily since Christmas ‘17 (one month) and making progress.
Love the ability to repeat lessons over and over. Initial teacher, Lisa McCormack, is clear, patient, full of great tips, instills optimism . . . And makes learning fun.
I got a one year subscription from wife, for Christmas. Could hardly be more pleased. . . Except for sore fingers - not the fault of Guitar Tricks! . . . Which rocks!
