  • Amazing app!

I've been using this app for well over a few years now. Its super simple to use and i've never had an issue with it. It's great to do whenever you're bored, on the bus, train, while eating etc. just to refresh your memory. It turns learning kana into a fun game and genuinely helps me remember. 10/10 would recommend

  • Kana Mind Blown!

It only took me 3-4 days to get good at the game, and it was the best help I had at memorizing kana. Read out loud before answering, and reach 100%. Thank you!
  • Deserves 10 Stars!!

I was super excited to find this app! I’ve been trying to find something to help me with Katakana, and the few Hiragana characters that are more challenging.
This app is perfect! I love the learning feature, it really helps reinforce the romaji/sound that belongs with the character.
The proficiency feature is awesome as well! I love being able to see the progress I’m making, in real time.

For the first time in years, I feel like I’ve learned so much in just a few hours! I can’t wait to see how well I can read Kana after using this app for a week!

The only suggestion I’d make would be an option for a timed run through. Like the characters change after so many seconds, or something. I know speed isn’t as important, but I feel that it would help with focus at times, and beating the clock would feel good as well :)

Thank you so much for creating this fantastic app!!

  • I would give it a 5 star rating if....

This is a near perfect app for learning how to read and write Kana. The only thing missing is the option to reset the statistics while in a session to restart from scratch without going through the hoops of creating a new game everytime you make a mistake. Perhaps a button?
  • My Favorite Kana App, Now 64 Bit!

I tried at least 15 different Kana learning apps and hated all of them except this one. I was sad that it hadn't been updated in a long time and might disappear soon. No more! I am extremely excited to leave this as a permanent install on my iPhone and iPad, because it's simple, fun, and really, really good. Would happily pay for it if it wasn't free!

  • Very useful

I don't typically write reviews. But this app has been so helpful in my journey of learning Japanese. I'm using a language learning software and every time I get to Katakana I've always glossed it over because I've never seen or cared to memorize those characters before, unlike Hiragana which is everywhere and easily recognized. I've always thought all Katakana were the same. Thanks to this app, within less than a week I know exactly the sounds those Katakana make (most of the time it's English too). As an added bonus I had Hiragana mixed in with my flash cards. So I've learned to identify Hiragana better as well. Thank you for this wonderful resource! My only complaint is that there's only one font for the kana. It's a challenge at first, but after a while I got used to it and can identify the characters throughout different fonts.

Hi John, If you tap the piece atop the screen (the main symbol) it'll switch between calligraphic and block styles for the Kana. Then it'll remember your selection in the future. I know, it's not very obvious!
  • This I'd great for learning kana!

This app, makes learning kana easy!
  • Fantastic app for what it does!

This is a fantastic app. After a solid day of study and you will have kana down. I wish they could add a feature that forces you to type the romanji from memory though. As that's much harder once you start to know them better. Also I hope they make one for kanji too. There are not a lot of apps out that help learn kanji just help remember what you have studied.

  • Great App

    Very nice app.
  • Almost perfect

The interface is great and the app is great for learning without unnecessary animations making it great for speed. My only complaint is that when selecting a character set, it's currently impossible to select only voiced characters. (It displays 0 characters selected and will not allow you to continue) This may be a bug, and if it gets fixed in an update, I'll re-rate to 5 stars for sure!

Hi Fizhyz, Indeed, the group selection can be confusing. The current selection was done by "excluding" groups, so if you selected only "voiced" characters, you'd see 0 total characters because they all happen to be in other groups that were excluded. That was the expected behavior because otherwise it gets harder to exclude certain characters like historical symbols. But it was not ideal and not clear, as your experience attests. I know you wrote this review a while ago, but wanted to let you know that I've updated the character group selection screen to be more powerful and obvious. Now there's "including" and "excluding" groups, so it's possible to select what to use. In your case, selecting voiced characters *only* would work as expected. This will be in version 2.0, coming as soon as it's approved by the App Store. Thanks for pointing that out.
