Best of all Map Apps

I’ve used this for some time now and find it easy to use. I really like the appearance of the maps - very clear and easy to see and, as I’ve just discovered, much better than the OS maps as you get more information. I’d signed up for the OS app, thinking it would be the definitive map and thought I’d use it for a walk to Wansfell Pike. However, we found that many of the footpaths we saw (including a National Trust signed one) weren’t marked on the App. When I checked this app, I saw that the NT footpath was marked on it and then realised that, not only do you get the OS map, but information from other sources too so it’s much better. I deleted the OS app and will just stick with this one (and a paper map and compass for safety).

Response from developer

Thanks for the positive review. You’re quite correct, as clearly stated in the description, the app combines maps from OS, footpaths from contributors to OpenStreetMap and search data from OS and the Database of British and Irish Hills. It’s also possible to create or record custom routes or overlay routes from external sources. It’s pleasing to read you’re planning to keep your paper map and compass with you.

Great offline OS map

We used this app while visiting the Lake District and found the offline Ordinance Survey Map function incredibly useful. No need to buy and carry around paper OS maps. Even when we had no service, the map worked fine and the phone’s GPS was able to show us where we were on the map with precision. Being able to see the various hiking routes on the map allowed us to make spur of the moment decisions - meant we could often figure out ways to do circular hikes rather than repeating ourselves. We didn’t use any of the app’s more advanced functionality - as an offline OS map was all we needed. Highly recommend.

I was holidaying in the Lakes and forgot my GPS. I downloaded this app in the hope that it would aid my map reading. Absolutely fantastic - easy to use great features allowing one to easily see distances to next significant signpost in the walk. By the end the the day I hardly consulted my paper map. Will still use the paper map as it gives a great overview but will definitely continue to use this app. Brilliant value well done

Thanks for the positive feedback. Its always pleasing to hear from happy customers.

Far superior to the OS app

I was looking for a map app for a walking holiday in the Lake District. I tried the OS official app, but that was a painful experience and I quickly gave up.

This app lets you download good maps of the whole Lake District to carry around offline. I never had any problems and would strongly recommend to anyone looking for something similar. If I need apps for other areas this developer will be my first call.

Why only 4 stars? Two minor complaints. The app isn't optimised for an iPhone 6 screen size, meaning it doesn't make the best use of the available screen area. Given that size has been out for three years that's a bit poor. Also found the behaviour of the show my location button a bit counter intuitive (seem to have to tap it too many times). In particular, it requires extra taps to show the direction you're facing rather than doing this by default. This is both annoying, and also meant I didn't realise it had the feature until I found it by accident after a few days. Neither flaw should stop you buying the app, but it would be great if the develop could address them and make it perfect.

Response from developer

Thanks for the positive feedback and for giving us the opportunity to address your points. Re: the screen size issue you refer to - please note that there is an option in the left hand drawer user interface to change the size of some of the text. Re: the second point about needing to press the tracking button twice to orientate the map view with the compass - we have implemented this consistently with how Apple Maps works in an attempt to make it intuitive.

Impressive

Currently on holiday in the Lake District and came across this whilst browsing the app store. Was planning a walk for the following day and having always been a die hard paper O/S map user I was fairly sceptical about any real advantages to be gained by using this kind of app but since it's so reasonably priced and given the other favourable reviews I decided to give it a go. Downloaded onto a mini iPad (which as it happens fits nicely into the leg zip pocket of my walking trousers) it turned out to be a very useful and accurate resource indeed and without doubt worth every penny. Would give it ten stars if that option was available.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review and for sharing your favourable comments with review readers. It's always rewarding to receive praise from satisfied customers for the enormous effort that our developers invested in our products. Please continue to take a paper map and compass (just in case).

Brilliant

This is my second review. If you walk in the fells and you haven't already got this app, you seriously need to do something about it. I was out last Thursday on a route I know very well and the mist came down and I got totally lost. I opened the app and within minutes I was back on the right path and heading to safety. I'm quite convinced that if I had not been able to do this I would have been in serious difficulty. Everyone who uses the fells should get this.

Response from developer

Thanks for taking the time to update your review for the latest app version and for sharing with review readers how our app has helped you, as an experienced fell walker, stay safe in difficult conditions. Review readers certainly need to appreciate that conditions in the fells can be changeable and the right clothing and equipment (e.g. paper map, compass and this app or one like it) are essential to personal/group safety.

Needs clearer description of boundary

Whilst the map itself is fine, the unclear description of the boundary meant that there was no way for me to know that the area I needed was just outside the area covered. A simple image of the boundary marked on the map would have avoided this issue.

Edit:
I've improved my review rating in response to the developers response and amendments. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks for positively revising your rating after our response to your original rating and comments. Our original response follows.... Thanks for taking the time to write a review and for the constructive feedback. For the benefit of people reading review comments we have now published what area the map extents covers. Please note however that we did slightly increase the content to include the 2016 national park boundary changes (not shown in the linked image) . http://jomosolutions.com/Maps/LakeDistrict/

Great maps. Import files doesn't work

Great maps. Zoom in and get all the OS map layers. But you can't transfer maps from iPad to iPhone because the import doesn't work... Message is "file imported, 0 routes, 0 tracks, 0 segments" and nothing is actually imported. Please fix.

Response from developer

Please can you send us the problematic gps file so we can investigate further? If you contact us using the send email functionality we will reply when our developers are available and try and resolve your problem.

No need for map top app

Used in lakes, wish I'd bought all maps in one go...didn't need maps at all as great planning tool and beacon all available when in most remote areas for checking route position. Top app, improvement to it would be tracking of distance but no real need. Great app and maps now always in the rucksack

Response from developer

Thanks for taking the time to write a review and for the positive feedback. It's much appreciated. We're pleased you're still planning to continue taking paper maps just in case.

Disappointed

Really not what I expected.

I was looking for a map that already had many walks defined so I could follow them.

At the very minimum, I want something that would record where I did walk so that I would have a log and could possibly do it again my next visit.

This app did neither. Just a map with trails. Very disappointed after spending the money.

Response from developer

The app contains footpath data defined by OpenStreetMap contributors. If you want to add other walks you can import waypoints/routes using gps files (freely available on the internet). Our developers are planning to implement track recording in the near future.
