Reviews of Western Philosophers

  • Overall great, fun, and handy

Great quotes, links, and design. Only downside is the app feels a bit politicized: it emphasizes activists and Lefty thinkers that are usually taught in “studies” departments, i.e., Marxist-derivative and postmodern activists (although there are also postmodern philosophers) that engage in deductive theorizing by applying Marxist concepts to their chosen focus regardless of whether philosophical coherence is maintained. In other words, the theories studied in sociology and various “studies” departments—the pamphleteers in addition to the philosophers. But according to this app you would think the pamphleteers hold as much of a role in philosophy as the philosophers. But overall a great and fun app.
  • Incredible value for curious intellectuals

I never write reviews for apps but this app has so much value. It includes a timeline, map, and database of some of the most significant thinkers in history including Frederick Nietzsche, Plato, Machiavelli, Henry David Thoreau, Carl Jung, etc. Not only does it include some of their best quotes which is accessible for all readers, but it includes entire databases of some of these famous philosopher’s most essential essays and books as entire audiobooks/ebooks. All for free!! The value and accessibility of this app is just insane and is perfect for someone like me that wants to learn more about the deeper complexities and questions of human existence. 5 stars all day.
  • PLEASE UPDATE

I’ve enjoyed this app—with its easy-to-use, detailed interface, iMessage stickers, and “philosopher” camera—for almost two years, but I really wish it were updated for the latest OS and devices… specifically, the widgets. Having the widget only on the search screen on iPhone and sidebar on iPad is nice, but implementing the new home screen widgets would be more useful.

Also, there’s a bug on iPad where if you are in landscape mode while taking the quiz, the names are hidden behind the photos.

Sadly, the fact that this app hasn’t updated in over two years makes me feel that the developer has abandoned it.
