Western Philosophers User Reviews

Overall great, fun, and handy

Great quotes, links, and design. Only downside is the app feels a bit politicized: it emphasizes activists and Lefty thinkers that are usually taught in “studies” departments, i.e., Marxist-derivative and postmodern activists (although there are also postmodern philosophers) that engage in deductive theorizing by applying Marxist concepts to their chosen focus regardless of whether philosophical coherence is maintained. In other words, the theories studied in sociology and various “studies” departments—the pamphleteers in addition to the philosophers. But according to this app you would think the pamphleteers hold as much of a role in philosophy as the philosophers. But overall a great and fun app.

Funtastic

Love the concept. Fun way to discover information. The content is great but the presentation needs special mention too!

Thank you!

Please fix some major issues

The books, most audiobooks and articles barely work, please fix these issues. I would have given the app a 5 if these didn’t exist. And please add some books for other philosophers such as Bertrand Russell.

Love it!

I love this app! It’s no substitute for doing the hard work of engaging directly with the work of philosophers (and it’s not trying to be) but it’s a wonderful way to get an overview of philosophy and see how different thinkers align with or challenge each other. And it’s so beautifully designed and elegant to look at!

Incredibly informative!

Really good app it’s kind of like twitter w/ all your favourite philosophers, it’s fulfilled everything it says it does. I just want to highlight the name ‘western philosophers’ I mistakenly ignored the western and I spend ages searching for my favourite philosopher Confucius. I’d love to see (potentially in a new update) including eastern philosophies because there theory’s are extremely interesting

Incredible value for curious intellectuals

I never write reviews for apps but this app has so much value. It includes a timeline, map, and database of some of the most significant thinkers in history including Frederick Nietzsche, Plato, Machiavelli, Henry David Thoreau, Carl Jung, etc. Not only does it include some of their best quotes which is accessible for all readers, but it includes entire databases of some of these famous philosopher’s most essential essays and books as entire audiobooks/ebooks. All for free!! The value and accessibility of this app is just insane and is perfect for someone like me that wants to learn more about the deeper complexities and questions of human existence. 5 stars all day.

I cannot believe this app is free

Almost every app like this now a days will constantly ask to pay a subscriptions and majority of the good content would be behind the pay wall. Not this app. Completely refreshing app, 10/10!

Sly, Covert Propaganda

The promoted “topical philosophers”, being noted as the philosophers who are “relevant to our time”, are either some of those who have impacted our society in the worst possible way, or those who are their weakest opponents.

Marx’s inspiration the statist and historicist Hegel, Neo-marxists Theodor Adorno, radical gender theorist Judith Butler, racist Frantz Fanon, and post-modern progenitor & colonial child molester Michel Foucault are championed. Other carriers and celebrants of insidious ideas are also prominently promoted.

Little attention is given to Socrates, Karl Popper or other important philosophers whose ideas counter and balance out the most important discussions of our time.

Best app in the store

No paywall, no micro-transactions, no advertisements, just a passion project offering creative and educational tools for free. An especially useful tool for beginners to philosophy, engaging features for youth, and intriguing incorporation of social media layouts for philosophy ideas in the contemporary world.

great for a level philosophy

i’ve been struggling to find accessible resources to help with my revision. found this yesterday and i’ve been hooked! not a single flaw to the app. makes key concepts and ideas so easy to digest. 5 stars from me! hopefully an app/ version with non-western philosophers is in the making - a diverse range of sources in thinking is completely necessary. nevertheless thanks for such a wonderful creation!
