Description of Rise & Recharge

An app to encourage a healthier balance between sitting and being active. Rise & Recharge was developed by Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute — with support from Vodafone Foundation Australia — after our research demonstrated the link between sedentary behaviour and the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer. On average, adults sit for about nine hours each day, and much of this time is continuous sitting with little movement. This lack of movement affects the way our bodies convert food into energy leading to unhealthy levels of blood glucose, insulin and blood fat. Research also shows that doing regular exercise may not fully protect against the health risks of long periods of continuous sitting. Use Rise & Recharge to track the time you spend sitting and how often you get up. Move at least once in a 30-minute period and add up your periods of movement to achieve your star rating for the day. Aim for the ultimate of achieving a 5-star day! To help you achieve a 5-star day customise your app reminders to receive regular alerts to get up and move. Please note This app uses step data collected by the Apple Health app — using the accelerometer built into your phone. As models earlier than the iPhone 5s do not have an accelerometer, you will require a wearable motion tracker to use this app correctly.

  • NOT user-friendly to new users

I tried to utilize this app but I couldn’t figure out what it is supposed to do or how to get it to do anything. I saw a report in it about yesterday that said I had several breaks but (had gotten) zero stars.
  • Developer’s hearts and Minds in the Right Place

This app is designed with your long-term health in mind. The fact it’s free and contains no ads of any kind is impressive and shows that it is designed to look out for your health.

if you’re willing to check on it frequently, you can help guide you to a lifestyle where you I’m more active and a more conscious of the amount of time spent being idle.

I recognize that this app has great potential for growth. At the time of this writing, The alerts did not work on my iPhone 7 so if I was approaching and bake. Without having moved there would be no indication from the app to let me know unless I look for it. The alert should work whether or not your phone is set to vibrate or not. I have also noticed some cases where I would take a break and walk well over the 15 steps minimum required to get break credit but the app would not respond.

I trust that with time and more users, this app may continue to get the attention that it deserves so that it will improve.

Thank you to those responsible for creating this application, thank you for recognizing the health benefits at this app could provide, and for making it available for us to use.

    Best regards,

    Jonathan P. Clermont

    NOTIFICATIONS BROKEN. :(

Without this out, I tend to hyperfocus, sitting hours without getting up.

It may not sound like much, but making sure I briefly get out of my chair every 30 minutes makes a giant difference in my health and well-being.
