  • Really Good!

I've been playing for a while now and this game is really good. The controls are clean (plus you can move the buttons around the screen), precise jumping and good sound. Well worth the $.99.
  • A very slick effort

There are a handful of great games out in this style, Devious Dungeon 2 and Goblin Sword for example, but Sword of Xolon nails it with amazingly fluid controls and excellent presentation.
  • A unique & quirky pixel platformer.

There are quite a few pixel/8-bit platformers in the App Store. And to be honest, they all feel very much alike. Sword of Xolan, on the other hand, sets itself apart from the pack, right from the get-go. This game has a flavor all it's own and it's a really refreshing change of pace. It may not look or feel as refined as some of the other retro platformers out there but that's part of the charm.

The graphics do their job and the enemies are nice and varied. The music is upbeat and fitting and Xolan even talks to you! The catch phrases were an amusing surprise that adds even more quickly charm. The only gripe I have with this game is that the controls could be tightened up a bit. The lack of a "pressure sensitive" jump gets frustrating fast. But, on a positive note, the ability to drop through floors by down-swiping is SUCH a great addition. (Most platformers make you hold the jump button to drop down a level, which I have always hated.) The option to upgrade Xolan through "Game Cards" is also a nice and rewarding feature.

All-in-all, Sword of Xolan is a fun, entertaining and quickly little retro gem. Well worth the 99 cent admission fee.

  • Similar to...

other games like Devious Dungeon 2 and Goblin Sword. Almost exactly the same. This one is a bit more funny though, seems more retro style too ala Sega Genisis or SNES.
Good price. Get it.. it's fun and hard enough to get through without dieing, that it is a challenge. Goblin Sword is harder though if you really want a serious challenge.

  • An unexpected gem

I was not expecting to like this game. I was skeptical of the seemingly low quality f/x and cheese of the intro. But from the moment I started actually playing, I knew this was something special.

The quality of the gameplay cannot be understated - the controls are tight and responsive and just feel great to use. The cheesy dialogue and jaunty music mesh perfectly with the enthusiastic-but-imperfect imported game feel, and the action is intense and rewarding.

Highly recommended, a steal for $1

  • It's ok but Goblin Sword is Better

Very close to ripping off Goblin Sword entirely right down to the theme, hidden walls, etc which isn't a bad thing. Goblin Sword's design was super tight where as this game comes off a bit amateurish. It's only ok since Goblin Sword was so amazing.
  • A good game that could be great

This is a wonderful platformer that reminds me very much of Goblin Sword, another .99¢ game that I had a ton of fun playing. The thing that really dials this game down for me is the controls. First, jumping isn't pressure sensitive, meaning that no matter how long you hold jump you always go the full height, which basically kills the fun of speedrunning and leads to some frustrating situations. Second, when you slide your finger off a button the game holds that button for you. This is nice, but being able to slide onto another button (such as holding jump and sliding to attack for a mid-air swing) is a lot nicer than having to tap twice. The level design is great but I hope to see the controls made just a tad smoother.

  • Spot on controls...feels like I'm playing SNES

Traditional style games like this one suffer on IPAD due to sloppy controls on the touch screen.

    Fear not!

This game is exactly what other adventure type games on this platform should strive for.

    We'll worth your dollar.
  • Good game!

The best 1.15$ i spend in a while, controla are good no lag, addictive
  • Well crafted

What can I say that others haven't already said? This game is just pure joy to play. If you like platformers, this is a must play. And for 99 cents, there's little yo hesitate about.

Buy and play now, you won't regret it.
