Waste of money

Desktop app is great $8 a month to connect to my local instance? No thanks. I’ll just use a free browser.

Need option to connect self hosted server

The platform is good but the app does not allow you to specify your own server.

The web app option worked but no way to secure it using face id. If we can point it to our own server then i can secure the app with ios 18 app protection feature.

DO NOT use with open source Actual

Please note this does not work with open source Actual (Actualbudget.org). The original paid for Actual is no longer open to subscribers (actualbudget.com) and this app is deprecated

More expensive than YNAB!

Thought it might be a cheap alternative to the outrageously priced YNAB then found out this is even more outrageously priced! The irony of budgeting apps blasting holes in your bank balance is clearly lost on them.

Can’t connect to self hosted instance

I have a self hosted actual-server but there doesn’t seem to be a way to connect to it. Creating an account leads me to a thing where I have to subscribe for $7.99/mo and nowhere in the app description does it mention this. Huh?

Oh no 😟

Doesn't work with Actual server :-(

How to connect to my local server?

I would like to connect to my local Actual server. How to do that?

Support

I subscribed and sent a few support emails. I never heard back.

Simple budgeting app

I’ve used YNAB4 and nYNAB for nearly a decade and was displeased with the companies’ direction after rolling out nYNAB. As someone who just needs to maintain my budget, Actual Budget is nearly perfect. It lets me budget as I need to without features getting in the way, and it works across my phone, laptop and desktop so I can budget anywhere.

Folks new to budgeting entirely may want to look at other options that provide more support/guidance for new users. You will also want to plan on using a desktop or laptop to set up your budget; the app is more for adding transactions on the go than doing everything. If you’re looking for a mobile-first experience, there may be better choices out there.

Not ready for release.

I have tried numerous times to sign up for the app. It has taken multiple attempts to get a single sign in code. When I finally do get that sign in code, the app simply hangs and proceeds to only show me an infinitely rotating wheel which implies that it’s loading (spoiler alert: nothing is loading).

Clearly, the app has been rushed through development without any logical sense of testing. It simply doesn’t work.

If you want to try your luck, go ahead. Prepare to be disappointed.

A breath of fresh air

A clean budgeting app which hits everything I would want:

1) Envelope-style zero-based budgeting
2) A clean and fresh UI that doesn’t feel cluttered
3) Friendly and responsive dev (check out the Slack!)
4) Obvious progress and improvements and updates
5) Real thought and consideration going into the development
6) A proper desktop app
7) End-to-end encryption!

The last one’s the real differentiator for me. At last, an app where I actual-ly (😎) properly feel comfortable with putting in my finances!

Actual-ly respects your privacy

What the title says. Although linking a bank account seems like an essential feature in 2021 so I hope the roadmap follows through!

Can’t delete or edit bill categories?

The website seems to give instructions for the desktop app, but there doesn’t appear to be this very basic functionality on the app. I’m sure it’s great when it’s all set-up, but this feels very alpha.

Your app has a bug

When I try to type email or anything in the app I can't see anything, cursor is moving but none of the entries are visible.

Daily use for months - very satisfied

I am a budgeting novice. Picked up Actual in August, started tracking my spending, and am now getting way more disciplined. App is easy to use, and fast. I pick it up after every time I spend money now, and know where every penny is going. Feels like I’m in control of my money for the first time. Great for budgeting beginners like me.

Good potential

This app looks clean and based on your Twitter, it will continue to grow. Someone posted that there was no submit button for transactions, which is true, but swiping to the side seemed to work as a submit. Keeping it and waiting to see it get better. Love the purple top bar. Maybe implement a dark mode? Keep it up, once it’s full of feature I might consider the sync.

Needs improvement

This app has a lot of potential to be a simple, clean budgeting app, but as of right now it is impossible to use. First & most importantly, i cannot figure out how to add transactions, because there is no “submit” button, only a “delete transaction” button. Also, there should be a way of adding transactions directly from the main page, rather than having to click into the specific account. Additionally, i can’t figure out how (or if there even is a way) to delete/rename categories or accounts, which seems like such an obvious feature for the app to have. Please fix these features and i may consider returning to this app!

Made budgeting easy

I followed James along his development process as I eagerly awaited the release of Actual. I was not disappointed. No ads, no recommended credit cards - just a clean, easy to use interface. Finally, a budget app that lets me budget the same way I think of my money. Great work!
