Unable to be compatible with adblockers

I have an extension that is used to block youtube ads on safari called Wipr Extra. If I enable Wipr Extra and APF it wont work the video player will bug out and the captions button and the theater button and the other buttons wont work. Please make a update to fix this it used to work last week probably because youtube made an update.

Use for more than profanity

I have since moved to text to speech to have web pages read to me. However the novels that I read use multiple different symbols as separators and the reader pronounces ever special character like “+++++++++++++”. It is very annoying to have the voice say plusplusplusplus… I now have the repeating characters replaced.

BEAUTIFUL

this app works so perfectly~~ but 1 question, does this work with other apps besides safari?

Troubleshooting

First, thank you for making an app that will filter language from movies. That said, I am experiencing an issue. I am attempting to mirror a movie that I am watching on my iPad. It seems to play fine until I get to a filtered word, then it gets stuck in a loop there and will not go forward. Any suggestions?

Response from developer

Thank you for the kind words! I haven't specifically tested with mirroring, but I also don't see a problem with it either. Which site(s) have you tried it on? Does it behave the same when not mirroring your screen? I tried it on YouTube and didn't see the behavior you are describing, but each site can behave differently, so it may depend on where you are watching. If you can get me more details I'm happy to look into it and hopefully we can resolve the issue. For faster support, feel free to reach out over email: support@frostco.dev.

Waste

Tried everything but does not work on safari. Will change rating if someone can fix it.

Response from developer

I'm sorry that it isn't working you. I would love to help you out if you can reach out to me and let me know what isn't working, or what you have tried so far. Here is the getting started page that also might help in getting it setup and running: https://github.com/FrostCo/AdvancedProfanityFilter/wiki/Getting-Started:-Safari If you need any additional help, please don't hesitate to reach out on Discord or send an email to support@frostco.dev

Works great

It works great for me! :D

Response from developer

I'm so glad that you like it and are finding it useful!

Vader

It’s working perfectly thank you

Not impressed and not user friendly

Man If this was free I would say a word…
But with that being said this app costs a little money… and no free trial.

I wanted to use this for socials, but I realized it doesn’t work on apps so I just deleted the apps and saved a bookmark of facebook.

Well that’s where it got tough because I couldn’t get it to work in settings for a while, so I watched a YouTube vid on how to set it up right… and it started to work!
But the next day I get my phone with the exact settings it had the previous day only to find it not working at all now and I can’t seem to get it to work. :(

Just to wrap it up… for one yall need a UX designer🤦🏻‍♂️😂 second, have more easy to understand directions because all the GitHub articles take like a coder to understand!
You have to look and the majority of your demographic as not-so-techy people who just want a fairly easy tool to use to block profanity.

I am sorry to leave a bad review as I never have before, but this one I had to😔

Response from developer

I'm sorry that it didn't live up to your expectations. I am definitely more on the "techy" side myself, and unfortunately I don't have the resources right now to hire someone to help on the UX side yet. I will be very happy for the day when I can though. You said it stopped working after a day, which might be a Safari setting as it can block extensions access after a day if you don't authorize it for longer. If you're still interested in the app, you might check out the getting started guide here: https://github.com/FrostCo/AdvancedProfanityFilter/wiki/Getting-Started:-Safari Thanks for your feedback and honesty, hopefully I'll be able to use it to improve the product. I'm also happy to help out if you have any other questions or suggestions in the meantime, and I will try my best to help out however I can. Feel free to join the Discord or send an email to support@frostco.dev.

Should have told me before buying

The app does not allow a trial, which would have been nice since the app won’t work on safari if you have web content restricted in screen time settings That would have been nice to know before purchasing - now my app is either worthless, or I have to turn off content filtering. 👎

Amazing!

Seriously incredible! The developer has done something amazing in creating this app and the chrome extension. They both work very well and are extremely flexible and customizable. I love it! So nice to not have to wade through the thick sludge of profanity that envelopes everything on the internet these days.

Request: Any chance this could work on Kindle Cloud Reader?😬 That'd be the cherry on top for me, but I'm assuming the text is displayed in a different way and that's why it's not currently working.

Response from developer

Thanks for the kind words, I'm so glad you like the app! Unfortunately the filter isn't able to work with the Kindle Cloud Reader because the book's text is actually served as images instead of text. The online reader for Google Books does work currently, but I know that doesn't really help with your use case. Hopefully there will be an update at some point that will allow for supporting Kindle Cloud Reader though!

Troubleshooting

Was able to get the extension to work through Chrome Webstore on a Windows PC; worked great. Thanks for creating an app to filter out the profanity that floods the entertainment industry.

Trouble getting the Safari version of the extension to work for iOS. Went into settings to enable the extension. Went into the settings of the extension and enabled mute for audio, but nothing happens. Suggestions?

Response from developer

Hi! I'm sorry that the app isn't working like you expected. I'd be happy to help try and get it working for you. When you say it isn't working, do you mean the text filtering, the audio muting, or both? For faster support feel free to send an email to apf@frostco.dev.

Doesn’t work

There aren’t any instructions and when I finally got the extension turned on it still wasn’t filtering properly. I think you have to have a computer science degree to figure it out.

Response from developer

I'm sorry that you had trouble with using the app. Unfortunately there are a few steps that have to be taken before it can work. These steps are added by Apple for consumer protection due to the permissions that Safari extensions can have. Here is a page that goes over how to get it setup: https://github.com/FrostCo/AdvancedProfanityFilter/wiki/Getting-Started:-Safari#-ios-iphoneipad Let me know if you have any other questions or suggestions. Thanks!

Great filter

Works great with regular webpages. Is there anyway to get it to work with a PDF? I can load one of my books into Safari as a PDF but it doesn’t seem to be working.

Response from developer

Unfortunately Safari doesn't allow the app to run on a PDF page, which means it won't be able to filter it. It may be possible to upload the PDF to a "book" website that renders it like a webpage, but that's about the only workaround I'm aware of right now.

I love these features!

Is there a way to filter out Amazons audible website? I’m able to play audio on Safari.

Response from developer

I'm glad you are enjoying the features! Unfortunately I'm not aware of there being any accompanying text (and timing info) associated with Audible, so that probably means this app can't do much to help in that situation. If you have any other follow up questions feel free to reply here, or send an email to apf@frostco.dev. Thanks!

Help please

I actually have the free extension of this on my laptop and it works perfectly fine! BUT I wanted to get this on my IOS iPhone and I did because I saw another review saying it works for streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and more! THAT WAS A LIE! Maybe I don’t know how to set it up.. I'm hoping the developers will respond to this review, unless I'm requesting a refund, because $5 is a waste of money!!!

Response from developer

Hello, and thanks for sharing your experience here. I'm sorry you feel like this has been a waste of money for you. Since this app is only a Safari extension, it can only work on sites that have content accessible in Safari. Some streaming sites do allow streaming video through Safari, and those should work with the filter, but there are many of the streaming services that require using a native iOS app to access their content, in which case APF can't function on those. Unfortunately there are a lot of variables that go into whether you can stream from Safari on iOS, including: Device type (iPad or iPhone), device generation/version, geographical region, and sometimes even the streaming account level (some sites offer different account tiers based on varying fees). This functionality can also be added or broken due to updates and changes on the streaming service's website. Since there are so many variables that can affect the filter, its probably worth testing playback on the video sites you'd like to watch to see if it will be possible for you. If you can play videos, and captions/subtitles are present but the filter doesn't work, feel free to reach out to me and I'll do what I can to resolve the issue. If the video isn't able to play in Safari though, there probably isn't anything that I can do in your case to support the audio muting. If there is anything I can help you with, please feel free to reach out on Discord (Link in extension's options page), or send an email to apf@frostco.dev. I hope that you can find a resolution you'll be happy with.

Can I use this to filter texts?

How do I use this to filter texts? Thanks!

Response from developer

Hello! Unfortunately since this is a Safari extension, it can only filter text visible in Safari. If there is a way you can access your texts in Safari then it should work. Feel free to send an email to apf@frostco.dev if you have any other questions or suggestions.

FILTERS EVERYTHING (AUDIO INCLUDED)

Literally every website has filtering options! It’s insane!!! Every website that has video playback and subtitles is filterable! Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Video, EVEN YOUTUBE!!! It’s truly the best! I use it for everything and is soooooo easy to manage and maneuver! And if your struggling at all, you can always ask for in the discord or through email with the develop! He is truly the nicest guy as I’ve had issues and he has happily resolved them countless times for me! So yes! This is the best service and I use it daily!!!

Doesn’t work with audio words

Downloaded app and added to safari. Changed settings so that is is active on safari. Added my words and tried it out on brittbox and showmax. Doesn’t work😢 Mad at myself for paying for something that doesn't work.

I don’t get it… it doesn’t work with Safari!

I consider myself a person who navigates apps well but, this is a nightmare!!!!!! First, I did not know it doesn’t work with Safari. So what’s the point. I have iPhone. Anyway, they got me. They got my money for nothing. I downloaded Chrome and there is no way to open the apps capabilities on the chrome app on iPhone so 🤷🏽‍♀️ They got me. $5 down the drain. When I first downloaded the app it says to open the extension in Safari settings but, it doesn’t actually work. I hope I did not get scammed and there is a virus on my phone.

Response from developer

I'm sorry you are having trouble with the app. This app is specifically to be used as an extension to Safari, so it won't work with Chrome or other browsers. If you are trying to use it with Safari though, it should support iPhones and iPads that are compatible with Safari Extensions (iOS 15+). Before it can run, you'll need to enable it on your device: Open your device's Settings app > Safari > Extensions. You can then enable it, and its recommended to allow it to run on all websites for the best experience. One it is enabled it should start working in Safari with the default settings, and you can use the extension's options page to customize your experience further. I would love to help you get it working, so please let me know if you have any questions or need any support. Feel free to send an email to support@frostco.dev.

Works

It take a little bit of setup, but works good on safari. It does work on a lot of sites, including YouTube.

Response from developer

I'm glad the app is working for you! If you have any questions, check out the Help tab, or feel free to reach out.
