Lvl 30+ player here. Game is very good - don’t trust 2.5 star reviews, those aren’t serious players. It’s mostly free, but paying $2 every now and then really helps boost quality of your heroes.
One fatal flaw is that in each server there are 1-2 whales who spend thousands of $ and get SO much stronger than everyone else. Devs won’t automatically reassign them to an older server, so it’s the #1 reason most people quit the game.

Not your old school AOE
This is a fermium game and it is nothing like the old AOE. This game is terrible. I would not recommend it to any one unless they like to play a game where who ever has the most money will dominate. This game will not last because if you pay a lot of money you can basically lord around doing whatever you want. When I say lots I mean thousands on a mobile game. Yes there are e people like that out there. They will just burn your castle. I never read the comments. I don’t think this game will survive.
