no way to report incorrect IDs and improve data quality
I took a picture of a plant and the app ID’d it as a bird (kereru)with a 0.977 probability. There were no birds present in the photo and certainly not a kereru hiding in close up photo of a small low-lying shrub (might be chilean guava or a bog cranberry?) The weird thing was that in the top 5 predictions the others were all plants (but not even close to the plant I photographed). My concern is that there is no option to report or contest an ID and I’ve had a number of incorrect IDs while using this app.

Much better at IDs but still lacking usability
Still missing copy/send functions of IDs. Lookup of details of other guess etc
Excellent
We have been using this app for some time now to identify unknown plants on a property we are regenerating - has been an excellent, effective and very useful tool esp as works off line. Has been great with juvenile forms of plants- unfortunately have old man’s beard coming through but now able to control it better as we know what we are looking for when it is tiny.Congratulations all round but teaching the app to recognise people did take some of the fun away from finding out what animal our mates resembled.

Fantastic app
On an iPhone
Impressive App & Yet Test it on Real Plants
Ran a trial on images stored on iphone gallery. Repeatedly flagged #unknown. Tomorrow 19/7/25
is testing it in real time at Ngahere....watch this space.

So helpful!
We’ve just returned from over 3 weeks visiting the south island of NZ. This app was excellent in helping ID plants and made such a difference in enjoyment of our trip.
Awesome Website, app not so good
I love the species classifier website it works extremely well but the app does not. Photos that the website identifies, the app can’t. There is also no private way to contact the developers to let them know.
Excellent application
Works a treat and offline too. I’ve been using it loads and my identification of NZ plants and trees has grown greatly. Great job Team!
the bomb
title says it all. i can now nerd out in the bush even without reception…
Freezes on Opening
App freezes at initial splash screen. I’m using iPadOS 17.5.1 on an iPad Air 5th generation. Tried deleting and reinstalling app with no luck.
Great – Could use improvements
This app was great to use, but it still struggles with identifying certain shrubbery and trees. In my experience, it identified a bush as a Blackbird.
Brilliant App
Love this app how you can use it on flight mode when out bush.
Amazing
This is the first review I have ever felt the urge to write for an app. This app works perfectly, and it can be used without cell phone service. I was dreaming of finding an app like this. Well done guys! Tu meke
Fantastic App
This app is amazing. Fast and accurate. Thank you
Wont work on ipad
Its brilliant on my iphone but all I get is a large screen with all the contributing groups on my ipad mini 5 and it wont do anything.
Work in Progress I guess
I was hoping being a "Shazam for the bush" that it might work like Shazam with bird song. Being able to pick up the song and identify the bird which you can often hear but not see... will probably come back again when that feature has been added.
Great App
This app is really useful. So far it has correctly identified the plants I have used it on. Usability is good, you can choose an existing photo or take one within the app. It gives Māori and English common names as well as scientific names.
This is absolutely amazing
I don’t usually write reviews, but this app is so good that I think more people should know about it and make use of it. This app is hitting all the right targets, the probability score, scientific name and common name, the identification history log, the options to use camera & gallery photos and etc. This is genuinely the best app for NZ floral & fauna recognition. 15/5 stars!!

Very handy
Oddly installed as “Wit App” on home screen, but has resolved a few disputes & furthered learning!
Good App, but hard to find
This app is called Aotearoa Species Classifier, but when the app is installed, it’s name is “Wit app”.
That’s a big problem if you’re trying to find it in the App Store to share.
When the app loads, it also is missing its name.
Both of these problems should be easily solved.
Secondly, when a species is unknown, the app says it’s “unkown” heading the description. This typo can also be fixed.
For the future, it’ll be great if the results can be shared (say, to email or any app), which will enable the data to be downloaded and sorted as a data file (together with the photo).
For now, users need to screenshot the results, and re-enter them (together with the sample photo).
Great start though.
