Great Artisan Bread App

This app is great for keeping track of recipes and easily editing to create new recipes. The note capability is very helpful. I love this app and use it every time I bake bread.
The app no longer runs on my old mini iPad but I still use it on my iPhone.

Basic app

I bake sourdough breads. It does not have provisions for sourdough breads, hence the hydration calculation is inaccurate. It does not meet my needs but it will do for now until I find a better app that’s designed for sourdough bakers.

Missing very little

This app is great fir my new micro bakery. There are very few things I would change or add. I use this app on several devices around the bakery and it would be great if it used a cloud based experience that shared recipes across multiple devices. It is too easy to make changes to a recipe and not update other devices. Maybe even an option to replace duplicate recipes. Also, it is less important to me what the Finished weight after baking is as opposed to the recipe total weight. And in grams nit pounds. Although it would also be nice to be able to select standard or metric and have it auto convert a recipe. I love the ability to scale my recipes and would be even better if you could use a quick scale button instead of a slider. Or even a fillable scaling option. I also would like to be able to edit the name of a bread in the edit window without duplicating the entire recipe into a new recipe and then drleting the old. Some of the functionality of Breadcalc.com would be awesome to add into this app.

It will do fine

It’s a basic tool. It does enough for my needs without being too fancy. It feels a tad clunky in maneuvering from feature to feature. My biggest criticism is I haven’t found how to input decimals in the ingredient list. I’m new to the program, so it may be available to do, but I haven’t found out how to do it yet. I assume it’s not available though. For smaller batches it’s not a big deal, but on 20k and larger bakes, I would like to be more accurate.

Photos

Would be great if you could include more than one photo. 3 would be adequate.

Excellent

This app is extremely useful when your breadmaking keep all your records on it for the different types of bread also it allows you to scale up if you need to I’d recommend this to any part time breadmaker.

Great App

A great App which does what it says on the packet. I’ve only used it for the last hour but already it seems that I can now I can throw away all my scraps of paper.

Just one minor inconsistency - why on earth give the finished weight in Pounds. Enter ingredients in Grams, finished weight should be in Kilograms.

As I try to use it more the limitations become clear. For basic breads it’s great but with something a little more complicated it struggles. A couple of examples:

1. The App includes ‘Leaven’ and can take it into account for hydration calculations. However if you want to use a Spelt leaven a new ingredient has to be created which is not considered in the calculation.

2. There doesn’t appear to be an easy way to show the ingredients for a preferment separately.

3. Some recipes will include small quantities of spice, eg. Caraway and Anise. In such cases a measure in teaspoons would be very helpful.

A great App but for me it’s disappointing. I thought I’d found a way to get rid of my written notes but for now they will remain and my search continues.

Perfect note taker

If you are starting out baking bread this is perfect for making notes of your recipes. Yep that’s it that’s the review it’s perfect. Oh and free. I’d for sure pay for this one.

Great app

Great app, just what I was looking for.

One useful tool could be a percentage calculator with the hydration of the bread.

Anyway, five stars rating.

Great Artisan Bread App

This app is great for keeping track of recipes and easily editing to create new recipes. The note capability is very helpful. I love this app and use it every time I bake bread.

Just a notepad

This app is a bit of a disappointment, it’s basically just a notepad with dropdown lists, not so much as a simple calculator built into it. I can do the same thing with the Note app already in my phone.

App

Awesome I love it....

A small incoherence

Just started using the app. Seems useful but just surprised that all the input math is in grams (good as it is the most used measure for serious bakers) but the final bread weight (output) is in lb (completely another type of measure and not coherent from a baker perspective). Please allow us to have the final bread weight in grams so we can further experiment with the app.
Thank you

Google it instead

No ratio calculator? I can google these “techniques”. How about a calculator that actually equates grams. Fermentation time. Temperature. Waste of money. Too late now.

Good App for the home baker

This app is a good simple tool for the home baker. It needs some fixes as the total bread weight is in pounds. It lets you record your recipe, scale it as you require and then add a photo with your own notes. Hope you develop this app in the future.

Useful but could improve

He app is useful for tracking bread recipes in a way that makes sense. He recipe scaling is very handy, and is the main reason I use this app. It would be nice to see the ingredients lousy expanded into a fuller database that allowed for volume/weight to be entered as well as some way to classify as dry or liquid so that oils, juices, milk, etc could be considered in hydration.

Very useful

Update: Using the latest iOS on my 5s, the app no longer displays whole recipes: the recipe pages show all the amounts, but shows the name and identity of only the first few (unless you go into edit mode).

Original review: I almost gave this four stars, because I have really embraced this app, but It does frustrate me. It should either supply a weight or allow me to define what various ingredients weigh per cup and per teaspoon, so I don't have to enter every amount in grams. I find it impossible to adjust the slider bar to within less than 20g of any given amount I want, except by chance, because I can't release it without jerking it. I have saved a screen shot of one lucky setting that I have made a favorite in my photo album, which I go to rather than trying to recreate it from the master recipe with the slider bar, and for another recipe I have created another recipe that was the same one scaled up. That would be a nice functionality, BTW, if when selecting to base a new recipe on an old one the app presented us a (non-tempermental) slider to base it on a larger or smaller loaf. (e.g. you might not want to make a chocolate loaf as big as the sandwich bread you based the recipe on). Anyhow, I use the app a lot, appreciate it and don't know of anything better.

Bread Hydration Heaven

This a great app for keeping track of all those recipes and the variations you make to develop great breads. Instructions are easy to understand and creating and editing recipes is simple.

The ability to record a recipe and then 'scale' it to various final weights is superb.

Hydration levels are calculated using the total of all the flour types you have in your recipe which makes it really easy to understand.

I am looking forward to seeing further developments and to more great bread with the help of this app.

Excellent!

Best free app out there for bread bakers who want a handy place to store formulas. Be sure to read the instructions and if you want hydration to include the leaven you have to go through iPhone main settings and select the option through the app listed there. Can't do it within the App.

Some suggestions for improvement are as follows:
1. Allow people to change the hydration of the Leaven. This can be done by allowing new ingredients to be added and as part of that giving the option of adding hydration % for the added ingredient. That way we can use mashes, porridges, soakers, etc, and allow the app calculate hydration correctly.

2. Would be handy to have a "procedures" screen in addition to notes. The procedure would include the steps to making the bread. The notes for noting variables during the bake, and how they impacted the loaf. And if you do this, add a check box for each step of the procedure so we can tick it off when done. No more forgetting to add the salt. :)

3. I assume it is a challenge but it is awkward to change settings outside of the App. Any way to just have it selectable within the app?

4. Replace the scaling slider with a manual entry and don't limit scaling to 2.0. The slide scale is "fun" but impossible to use with precision. And no reason to cripple a calculator by allowing it to multiply only by two.

5. Allow the ingredients to be ordered by the user. Alphabetical is annoying and the default ought to be by weight.

6. Allow for the formulas to show preferments, and ideally, soakers/add-ins. Yes, they can be added in one long list of alphabetized ingredients at now, but you wind up with something that looks nothing like how the formula should look.
