Excellent depiction of the Arnhem parachute battle, WW2

This turn based game is a delight to play. Easy mechanics, and very simple to understand.
I have read quite a few books about this battle, from British, American and German perspectives, and the game accurately reflects the problems that the British commanders faced.
The landing zones too far away from the objective; German reactions were quick, supply was erratic, the Polish drop was delayed. This game does an excellent job of placing the player into the same compromised decision making model. Speed to the bridge versus strength of force.
It’s a difficult game for the Allies player to win.
I like this game a lot.
Nothing flashy about the graphics or sound compared to more modern games, but very playable for people interested in a pretty realistic scenario that aligns with the historical battle.

How war games should be made

I agree with another writer about difficulty levels, it is possible to win as axis on higher levels playing purely defensive, almost impossible with allies. Still a good game to play.

I would love to see more traditional strategy games mirroring classic board games such as Operation Mercury or Barbarossa

Great, until you want to play on a harder level

Great game - love the units, the movement, the trade offs with the limited movement points, the day/night factor, the way they try to include the randomness of war into it. I think most people who like this stuff will enjoy this all the way through until they try to move to the harder level, and then it’s just a waste of time. Hexwar claim the step up is incremental - the enemy get more movement points and are slightly harder in combat. This is not my experience. The enemy are impossible to beat. I had a panzer unit, and two full SS infantry against one para unit, open fields, not dug in, no supporting anti tank. It should have been a slaughter. I shelled the paras, then attacked with all three units. Not a shell landed on the paras, then my panzers were destroyed and then both infantry attacked until they were red. Not a single loss in the sole para opposition. Really?! I’ve been shelling the US para on the bridge at Nijmegen for days and not a single shell has caused any damage. It’s a bridge - there is no cover! The only option is to keep playing the easier levels and winning, or switching to harder and watching units sit and watch the opposition steamroller a win. Such a shame as this could be a really addictive and interesting game concept if they could tweak the difficulty levels a little.

Traditional hex and counter is best

I am so pleased to see a traditional hex wargame over the 3D type which seems to be everywhere. I hope we get more. It makes for more intelligent gaming like Chess instead of "whack-a-mole". Thankyou to the developer.

Can’t understand the poor reviews

This is a well-executed traditional wargame that requires thought and skill. It is far ahead of the usual HexWar fare. More like this please.

Love the game

Hate the new App Store look. Haven’t bought anything since the changeover.

Great value

Overall a very playable simulation. Yes, the instructions could be better, but it's not that difficult to learn the game. The AI is acceptable at the lower levels of play, but is much stronger at the highest level. I will definitely purchase other games from this developer

Proper traditional wargame

A lot of the hexwar games are about as simplistic as wargames can be. Nothing wrong with that, I've played and enjoyed the 194x WW2 series of games.

AoA starts getting closer to the gameplay of traditional board wargames with accurate historical scenarios, units, deployments, objectives, higher level formations, formation integrity effects, multiple unit postures/status, HQ effects, limited supply, limited command control ..... Etc. It also offers the ability to play both sides, solo and multiplayer.

Limited scope and scenarios - but that's fine for its £4 price tag.

Overall very happy with this game, looking forward to more of the same ...

Arnhem

A couple of things to improve this game.

1. Expand the directions. How to use the supply drops is non existent. I have played numerous games, and can't figure out how to tap into those resources. Or, even if you are supposed to.
2. Playability is ok, but somehow unrealistic. In the Arnhem scenario, two units were able to obliterate 4 armored units (Konigstigers). Somewhat unrealistic.

Excellent hex/counter game

It's clear tremendous effort has gone into this game, which is both accurate and plays really well. My only comment is that the AI does need time to think, but then I had set it on the harder levels. I recommend it to anyone who has the time to play it.

Improved !

I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Hex War games. They always feel to cramped and basic.

This game however is a major step in the right direction. Just expand the content or come out with another battle - maybe on the East Front next time. Very good work - feels like a real war game !

And you need better advertising for Arnhem - most of my war gaming friends have no idea this game even exists !

As a big fan of TB1944...

TL:DR? This game is nothing like TB1944.

The geeks have broken out of the asylum, and been allowed to wrote a game that represents the very worst of 64-sided dice playing "lemma check the rule book" style table-top wargaming from the 1970s. The controls are incomprehensible. Combat is so rigidly turn-based as to be both meaningless and uncontrollable, while the array of meaningless, pointless data scrolls around in a manner designed to showcase the deep thought of the designer but not in a way which enhances your game-playing experience.

A huge disappointment visually and intellectually.

Now works on iPad2

Revised version now works on iPad2. It is slow, but works. No more crashes. Still figuring out the rules and game play.
-----
I haven't been able to make it past the instructions to even start a game. Crashes during start up. Crashes while trying to read the instructions. Support recommended closing all other apps and rebooting. I'll review again once I can actually play.

Fun to play but ..

Infantry made two attacks and wiped out panzer unit. I don't think so! Game is fun. Stacking units would be nice. Documentation could be beefed up. Additional recon units for Germans would be good. The game is good and will get better. I recommend to anyone playing solitaire. Keep up the good work, thanks for a fun game!

Disgrace

Won't even load. Sort it out.

Good game

Nice little game

Waste of money doesn't load

What is the point in releasing a app that doesn't work

Will not load.

I have the latest iOS update, and I installed an reinstalled this game. It will not play. Opens the title screen and then closes.

I would like a refund please. How do I make this happen?

Very unhappy

The game seems to be loading but then crashes developers need to sort this out!

Frustrating

Have almost all games Hex War has and enjoys all of them never with any problems except for this one.
Cannot get beyond the first screen as the game just shuts down after a few seconds then nothing.
Customer Service is more frustrating, after for days and many emails to them I have one response asking what platform I use. Then nothing.
