User reviews

This app is literally the goat

Honestly this is the best Astrophotography app I’ve used it’s pretty simple and effective and although it’s not as good with planets it makes up for it with the cool views of stars and deep sky objects through my 114mm telescope I was able to see the ring nebula clearly, clusters and many things that are pretty difficult to see otherwise so yeah w app, but one last thing to help with planets I’ve found that looking at it through the live view and taking a screen recording can give you detail without the problems of it moving during exposures.

More of a hinderance than an advantage

I like the user interface and layout but whenever taking more than around 10 exposures the app crashes. It also does this when stacking images. Just shuts itself down and cancled the stack after waiting ages. Also you can’t exit or let your phone go off whilst stacking images. That will cancel them too and also sometimes won’t alow yoj to save the images as the save button stops working. I think the best way is using an app like nocturne and just so I haven’t wasted my money might use Astro shader to stack images. But if I have problems i will delete and find a better app that doesn’t crash for the stacking part of my process

Response from developer

Hello, Sorry about this! I have not any reports of issues like this in the latest beta release, so slightly stumped. I will take a look through the log data and see if I can find any clues as to what is happening here... If you are willing please feel free to reach out on the CloudNights AstroShader forum. There are lots others on there too who might be able to help debug the issue

Save doesn’t work

When I try to press save on iPhone 13 Pro nothing at all happens even when I tested it on an extremely basic image with no editing

Response from developer

Sorry about this. Please try updating to version 1.2.5 and also check you have granted permission to add to your Photos Library. (I'm not seeing any crash reports for an issue like this - so struggling to debug. I regularly test on an IP13 Pro so fairly sure it's not a device specific issue).

Using for super resolution?

I love the app. Even though, admittedly, I haven’t really used it for astrophotography. Despite that, it is still one of the most interesting (camera) apps I have ever used.

It does noise reduction for “regular” photography great. I just wish it had the ability to get scaled (12mp to +48mp) up before or after stacking.

I also understand that this app is for astrophotography, so I wouldn’t be surprised if experimental “super resolution” wouldn’t be the first thing to implement. But I would like to ask anyways, as no other app I have ever seen can do anything like this one.

Either way, I love the app.

5 stars!

FAQ

What is AstroShader used for?

AstroShader is an application designed for capturing, stacking, and editing astrophotography images. It allows users to take photos of the night sky and process them directly on their mobile device, simplifying the workflow.

How does AstroShader differ from traditional astrophotography workflows?

Unlike traditional methods that require transferring images to a computer for alignment and stacking, AstroShader performs these processes live during image capture. This integrated approach streamlines the entire astrophotography process.

What are the key features for capturing images?

Key capture features include setting the number of exposures for stacking, exposure time, ISO, white balance, camera type, and a countdown timer. It also offers manual focus control and the ability to pause capture to reposition equipment.

What editing tools are available in AstroShader?

The app provides a comprehensive set of editing tools, including image stretching, background extraction, multiple histogram curves for tonal adjustment, sharpen layers with blending, brightness enhancement, saturation, black point, temperature, and tint adjustments.

What file formats can I save my images in?

You can save your edited astrophotography images in various formats, including HEIF, PNG, JPEG, and TIFF. The option to save as a 16-bit TIFF is particularly useful for further professional editing.
