About

ATM Chat lets you message people nearby without the internet. Messages travel between iPhones and iPads over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and can pass through other nearby ATM Chat devices to reach someone just out of range. No servers, accounts or phone numbers. In English and Arabic (Settings → Language). For flights, desert trips, camping, events and anywhere with no signal. Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on in Control Center on both devices; no network is needed, so it works in Airplane Mode. Devices reach across a room or into nearby rooms, less through walls and crowds. ONE-TO-ONE CHATS • Texts with delivery and read receipts; photos, videos, voice messages, contacts (you pick the details) and files, up to 10 photos and videos at once • What you send waits while they're out of range and goes when you're both nearby with ATM Chat open, for up to 3 days, unless Auto-Delete removes it first. Videos and anything over 700 KB wait for Wi-Fi • Voice messages: review before sending, play at 1.5× or 2×; drafts are kept when you leave a chat • Swipe to reply, or reply from an alert; tap a quote to jump to it; forward to several people at once • Emoji reactions, text selection, and search that shows each result in its chat • Translate messages with iOS, offline once the languages are downloaded • Photos and videos open full screen; paste a photo or drag in files. On iPad, chats sit beside the open chat EVERYONE NEARBY: A PUBLIC ROOM • One text-only room with everyone nearby, no setup or invites. Message a poster privately. Names aren't verified • Rules to agree to before posting; an on-device check hides posts that may be offensive until you tap Show • Hide it in Settings → Privacy; ATM Chat still passes its posts on • Posts reach who's nearby when sent, not people who arrive later; yours show how many devices they went to MESSAGE REQUESTS • Messages from someone you haven't written to or accepted arrive as a request: only the first alerts with sound, and they can't see you've read them until you reply or accept. Accept, block or delete it on the chat list. You can accept someone under New People Nearby before they write YOUR MESSAGES, YOUR DEVICE • Delete any message from your iPhone, or your own for everyone in a one-to-one chat (sent when you're next directly connected, then repeated for a week). Clear or delete a chat • Auto-Delete removes new messages from your iPhone after 30 seconds to 24 hours, or when you next open ATM Chat; the other person keeps their copy and isn't told • Save photos and videos, or a whole chat's, to your library • Erase all chats and media at once in Settings SAFETY • Block someone from their chat, request or post: what they send is dropped on your device and they're hidden from your lists • Report a message or a person by email NOTIFICATIONS • Choose your alerts, including Someone You Know Is Nearby, and mute any chat • In the background or on a locked phone, messages come only over an existing Bluetooth link. Keep ATM Chat open, or turn on Keep Screen On ACCESSIBILITY • VoiceOver reads each message as one item, with its actions in the rotor. Larger text, Reduce Motion, and filled Read ticks that don't rely on colour alone PRIVACY • No data collection, analytics, tracking or ads • Chat history stays on your device and its backups, never on our servers; we see a message only if someone reports it to us by email • Not end-to-end encrypted: messages travel in readable form between nearby devices, including any that pass them along • Nearby devices can tell ATM Chat is running and see your display name. Devices that connect also get your profile photo, if set, and your device ID (random, not your number or Apple Account, and not secret: it's in every message) • Turn off read receipts or the typing indicator; link previews stay off unless you turn them on • iOS's Translate and Look Up may send text you choose to Apple Built by Approve The Move: genuinely useful apps, always free, no subscriptions.

What's New in ATM Chat

1.2

October 31, 2026

A big safety and reliability update, now in Arabic. SAFETY & PRIVACY • Fixes security issues found in a review, including crashes that nearby devices could cause • Fixes issues that could remove chat history. Auto-Delete now applies only to new messages • Message requests: only the first message from someone you haven't written to or accepted alerts with sound; later ones are silent, and they can't see you've read them until you reply or accept. You can accept someone under New People Nearby before they write • Everyone Nearby is clearly public, with rules to agree to before posting and an on-device filter that hides posts that may be offensive. Message or block someone from their post • Turn off Show Everyone Nearby (Settings → Privacy) to hide the room; its posts are then only passed on • Link previews are off by default: loading one tells the website your IP address • Turn off read receipts or the typing indicator in Settings • Erase all chats and media at once in Settings NEW • ATM Chat in Arabic, right to left, when your iPhone or the app is set to Arabic (ATM Chat's Settings → Language) • First run explains each permission before iOS asks. Invite people with a link or a QR code • On iPad, your chats and the open chat sit side by side • In one-to-one chats, everything you send waits and goes when you're both nearby with ATM Chat open, for up to 3 days. Videos and anything over 700 KB wait for Wi-Fi • Delete any message from your iPhone; clear or delete a chat • Tap a chat's name for Chat Info: connection (tips if it won't connect; when they were last nearby), mute, Auto-Delete, saving, report and block • Tap the connected count to see who's connected and how • Give a contact a name of your own in Chat Info; a renamed contact's old name shows for up to a week • Auto-Delete (was Disappearing Messages) works on your phone only; the other person isn't told • Swipe a message to reply, or reply from its alert; select part of its text • Long-press a message to translate it, offline once the languages are downloaded • Search your chats and jump to any result. Swipe a chat to mark it unread or mute it • Voice messages: listen before sending, play at 1.5× or 2×. Drafts are kept when you leave a chat • In the chat and on the chat list, your messages show where they are, from Waiting to Read, or Not Delivered with Try Again • Photos and videos open full screen on iPhone too. Paste a photo or drag in files • Forward a message to several people at once • Choose which details to share when you send a contact MORE RELIABLE • Unconfirmed messages are re-sent when you reconnect, for up to 72 hours, over Bluetooth too • Over Bluetooth, photos no longer hold up texts, and batches arrive in order • Fixes a chat freezing or jumping while you read, and wrong unread counts • Switching networks drops fewer chats, and Bluetooth uses less power EASIER TO USE • VoiceOver reads each message as one item, with its actions in the rotor • Larger text, bigger buttons, higher contrast and Reduce Motion • Clearer words; chat titles say how you're connected, or when they were last nearby GOOD TO KNOW • In Airplane Mode, turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on in Control Center on both devices; no network is needed • In the background or on a locked phone, iOS pauses ATM Chat's Wi-Fi, so messages come, and replies from alerts go, only over an existing Bluetooth link. Keep ATM Chat open, or turn on Keep Screen On • Before you lose signal, try the chat list's 'Ready for no signal?' card PRIVACY POLICY Updated October 31, 2026 for 1.2: message requests, reports, what's kept on your device, what nearby devices see, and what iOS's Translate and Look Up may send to Apple. Settings → Contact & Legal → Privacy Policy. As always: no accounts, no servers, and messaging never uses the internet.
