Security — two issues found by an independent researcher, both fixed: • A single corrupted or forged packet could poison an encrypted conversation and leave every later message unreadable until the session was reset. Encryption state is now committed only after a message is proven authentic. • Bot conversation history was kept in app preferences, which device and iCloud backups copy as-is. It now lives in the Keychain, on this device only. Reported privately by Turáni Gergely — thank you. Messaging • Delivery is far more reliable: messages no longer get stuck when an encrypted session drifts, and group messages are no longer dropped for a group you have not joined yet. • Replies quote the right message and take the colour of the bubble they answer, and a message from yesterday shows a time you can find again. • Photos and videos send faster and use less data — quality is now chosen by measuring the link instead of guessing. Calls • Minimise a call to go read your messages, then tap to come back. • Contacts show their name instead of their public key, and Start Chat works from the call screen. Nearby and bots • The Nearby "Disconnect" button now actually disconnects. • Bots: a manifest that states what a bot may do, permissions enforced in one place, a directory where a listing cannot lie, and local bots that leave nothing on the server.

Audio doesn’t work

Tried video call and the audio was very weak and eventually just stopped with weird noises (but still low volume).

Response from developer

Hi OOC17, Apologies for the inconvenience. We’re going to review the issue and do our best to fix it as quickly as possible. We’re currently working on LoRa message transmission for the next update, and we hope to have your video issue fixed in the same update as well. Thank you for your patience and for reporting this to us. Best, Hugo - OSHI Team

FAQ

How does OSHI work without internet?

OSHI utilizes a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi mesh network to connect devices directly. Messages can hop from phone to phone, extending the range even without a cellular or Wi-Fi internet connection. This allows for communication with people nearby.

What is the range of the OSHI offline mesh?

The offline mesh has a short range, typically around 100 meters in open spaces and less through walls, provided both phones have OSHI open. The range can extend further if other nearby users also have OSHI open to relay messages.

Is my communication secure with OSHI?

One-to-one chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted using X3DH and Double Ratchet protocols, meaning only you and the recipient can read your messages. Your encryption keys remain on your device.

Can I make calls with OSHI?

Yes, OSHI supports both voice and video calls. These calls are also end-to-end encrypted for private one-to-one conversations.

Does OSHI require a phone number or email?

No, OSHI does not require a phone number, SIM card, or email address to use. It is designed for private communication without needing personal identification.

What kind of content can I share with OSHI?

You can share voice notes, photos, files, and live location through OSHI. It also features self-destructing 'view once' media for added privacy.

What is the on-device AI assistant in OSHI?

OSHI includes an AI assistant that runs entirely on your iPhone. Your prompts and its responses stay on your device, ensuring privacy, though its responses should be fact-checked.

What devices does OSHI support?

OSHI is available on Mac, Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad, allowing for cross-platform communication and usage.
