About

BCI Boats Check-in is the official boarding and check-in application for the ferry service between Gamboa and Barro Colorado Island (BCI), operated by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama. The app is used by employees, researchers, students, and visitors traveling to Barro Colorado Island and the Barro Colorado Nature Monument. At the dock, passengers can register their trip, scan their visit or boarding QR code, and check in when boarding. The application verifies that each passenger is included on the day’s manifest and provides real-time information on boat occupancy and capacity, helping ensure an efficient and organized boarding process. Available in English and Spanish.

What's New in BCI Boats Kiosk

The iPad no longer locks itself while the app is open. Previously the display could sleep on the sign-in and mode-selection screens, so an iPad left on its dock mount was sometimes found locked when staff came back to it. The screen now stays awake on every screen in the app, and the setting is reapplied each time the app returns to the foreground, so it also holds after the app has been in the background. The manifest now rests between trips. Once the boat has departed and the screen has gone unused for a few minutes, the manifest dims and shows a "Tap to wake" screen. This keeps passenger names off an unattended display and spares the panel during the long gaps between trips. The manifest stays fully lit through the hour before departure, when staff and passengers are at the dock, and a single tap brings it straight back. New app icon.
