QuietNight is a sound machine that does not charge you for its sounds, with an alarm that does not jolt you awake - and nights that have a shape.
All twenty sounds are free, unlimited, and always will be. No sound to unlock, no daily cap, no advert.
SOUNDS, IN FIVE FAMILIES
- Noise: brown, deep brown, pink, white, green
- Water: rain, thunderstorm, ocean, stream, waterfall
- Outdoors: wind, crickets, campfire
- Machines and rooms: box fan, aeroplane cabin, night train, air conditioner
- Tones and pulses: binaural beat, singing bowl, heartbeat
Nothing here is a recording. Every sound is synthesised as it plays, so there is no loop and no seam, the app is a few megabytes rather than a few hundred, and eight hours never repeats itself. Every sound is level-matched, so loud mixes never crackle. Soften takes the hiss off the top of any mix; Sway lets it rise and fall like slow waves.
ONE TAP FROM THE HOME SCREEN
Widgets for the Home Screen and the Lock Screen: last night's mix, or brown noise, white noise, rain or a fan, one tap each. And an optional bedtime reminder - silent, at the time you choose.
NIGHT SCENES
A scene is a mix that turns into another mix on a schedule, with no seam. Thunder while you read, then rain, then brown noise all night. A fire that burns down while the crickets go quiet. A twenty-five minute nap that ends on its own. Four scenes are built in and free; make your own from any sounds, any lengths.
DESCRIBE TONIGHT
Type a sentence - "hotel room with a loud air conditioner, up at 6:30" - and the designer composes a scene from the sounds the app already has, and proposes an alarm that rises into it. This is the one feature that uses a server: it is off until you turn it on, and it sends only what you typed. Three designs a month are free.
WAKING UP
QuietNight starts the sound you chose at a level you cannot hear, up to thirty minutes early, and raises it until you surface on your own. Pick the sound, the rise, the days, the snooze - or no snooze.
How it reaches you: if sound is still playing, QuietNight wakes you through the audio itself, which ignores the ring/silent switch and is the only way the slow rise can work. If nothing is playing, a notification does the waking, following your ringer setting. Both are armed every time.
THE JOURNAL
Every night is written down on your phone: what played, for how long, when you put the phone down, how the alarm went. Over a week or two it adds up - the mix you settle soonest with, your usual start time, how often you snooze. No sleep score, because the app does not measure sleep. Export it any time; it is yours.
SHORTCUTS AND FOCUS
Seven actions in the Shortcuts app: play a sound, start a scene, start a mix, resume last night, set a timer, stop, and read back last night. Start a scene when Sleep Focus turns on.
FREE EVERY MONTH
Every sound, unlimited mixing, five saved mixes, four built-in scenes, one scene of your own, three designs a month, the sleep timer, the widgets, background playback and the last seven nights of the journal are free. Alarms are metered at ten wake-ups a month, free, for everyone, resetting on the first.
QUIETNIGHT PLUS
Unlimited scenes of your own, unlimited designs and night reviews, unlimited wake-ups, unlimited saved mixes, and every night in the journal rather than the last seven. It is $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $14.99 once and forever - all three shown plainly, and there is no free trial.
WHAT QUIETNIGHT DOES NOT DO
No account. No sign-in. No analytics SDK. No advertising. The journal never leaves your phone. The only network request beyond Apple's own is the designer, which is off until you turn it on. Turn on Airplane Mode and everything else still works.
QuietNight makes no claim about your sleep, your health or your concentration. It plays sounds, and it wakes you up.
