Doesn’t ID and isn’t free

There were so many pop-ups I accidentally must’ve hit subscribe and now I can’t get my $39 back. Also, it doesn’t identify accurately.

Subscription scam

I thought this was a free App. I opened it to look up ONE insect and never used it again. I just realized I’ve been charged every week for over a year for a subscription I didn’t know I had. Did not approve money coming out of my account. Couldn’t get my money back. 👎🏻

Be Aware this is NOT FREE!

They advertise a free trial but when I couldn’t make it work I deleted within minutes they charged $59.99 and refused a refund. I will never use it so have paid $60 for NOTHING.

So not free!

Purchased app after a Google search for Australian Spider identifier came up with this free Apple Bug ID free app. I went through the motions and ended up paying AU59.99 for the year. On top of that the spider I apparently took a photo of was apparently a mouse spider that live on the ground and is 12mm long - that had a 70% confidence. The one that was 10% was more accurate but details on size and aggression levels were missing.

Different result every time

I kept resubmitting the same photo and the identification came up different every time.

size

I have a perfectly big picture of the big but it says it’s to small.
Does not meet my needs.
The bug is practically the whole picture and says it’s too small.

Description

I like how it easily identifies above with a picture. That’s a great feature, but the description is a little too, Scientific. What I mean by that is not all of us understand the terminology used for these insects. Not saying I’m uneducated, but it’s nice to just have a quick precise description, other than getting in to verbiage that I’d have to look up to understand situation with the insect better. Thee than that. Pretty interesting for sure.

Response from developer

Hello! Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. We’re glad you enjoy the app and understand your point about the descriptions being too scientific. We’ll take this into consideration as we work on making the app more accessible with simpler, clearer explanations alongside detailed ones.

Horrible

I purchased this to identify a fly that was in my basement that looked like a large mosquito. The app was way off. I then used it to identify a bee on my window. I wanted to see if it was a honey bee. The app didn’t even come close. Thought it was a spider and then a fly. Don’t waste your money. Not worth the $39 annual fee.

Kept telling me a beetle was bed bugs

Not close to actual pic

Required to subscribe for free trial

To unlock the “free 3 day trial” you must subscribe to a monthly auto renewal of $6.99. These apps are hoping a significant portion of their free trial users will forget to unsubscribe. Just make the app 99¢ a month from day one with a 24hr unsubscribe trial period and I am good. At that point I know what I am signing up for and the cost is low enough to ignore.
Not an issue for this app per-se but Apple should create an all you can eat subscription service for all $1.99 a month and less apps.

Response from developer

Hello! Thank you for your feedback regarding the free trial requirement. We apologize for any inconvenience and understand that this process can be frustrating. However, it is a common industry practice to require payment information for free trials to ensure that users are committed to using the app and to prevent abuse of the system.

Worked

I needed to quickly identify a red-backed jumping spider that had bitten me. Even though the picture I had wasn't very good, this worked! It was a relief to know that the spider wasn't very dangerous.

Joke

This app is a joke. I took a picture twice of a termite and both times it gave me critters that look nothing like it. One was some scorpion tail bug and the other was a black and red spotted bug that isn’t indigenous to the USA. Also, it is 7 bucks a week! Wow! No thanks!

Ty

Love it!!! Best bug app I’ve used!!!!

Not one correct ID

Trial run- entered several known samples and this was woefully incorrect on every try.

So fast!

Bug ID is so fast! I took a pic of this creepy-crawly and within seconds it told me it was a black widow spider. Scary! but good to know. The app even showed me what to do if I see one again. It's like having a bug expert in my pocket. I love how easy it is to use. Just snap a photo and you get all this cool info about the bug. My kids love playing bug detective with it too. We're learning so much about insects now. One thing though - sometimes it gets confused if the bug isn't fully in focus. But overall, this app is awesome.

Not good

Poor user interface. And it’s really not free — a subscription fee kicks in after 3 day trial and there’s no clear and easy way to cancel the trial. Bad, bad, bad.
